She really likes them but I have her a bowl full and after she ate like 20 of them I read the directions and it says for the first week mix 1/4 new food and 3/4 old for week two 1/2 new food and 1/2 old food week 3 3/4 new food 1/4 old food and week food all new food. Why would it want us to do that?

I’ve seen similar and have even heard a few close friends recommend similar. I’m not exactly sure the reason, but I’m assuming it’s so you don’t just suddenly change and have the possibility of them refusing the eat. My younger bun had no problem changing between foods from when I got him (and what he was being fed) to the new food in our home, but my older bun was a little more picky with the new food at first, and wouldn’t even eat the new food when I mixed it for the first week or so.

It’s because any swift change’s in a bunny’s diet should always be avoided. Plus it is because of what lillian says, many rabbits don’t want new food first, so they can refuse to eat it.

Rabbits’ stomaches are delicate, so it’s best to change to a new pellet slowly to allow them to adjust to the food and to make sure sure that the change isn’t upsetting their stomaches. I don’t know much about the pellet you’ve been using, but while I would still recommend going back and mixing the pellets, I wouldn’t worry about the fact that you didn’t start off by mixing them. I’m not sure what other members have done, but I’ve switched my rabbit’s food twice (the initial pellets he was on to Oxbow junior and just recently to adult pellets), and both times, the change lasted about a week (2-3 days on 1/4 new food, 2-3 days on 1/2 new food, etc).

I’ve always gone for a gradual change by mixing, and would say its best if possible. I wouldn’t worry one bowl wasn’t mixed though.

No, don’t worry about not having mixed the first portion. You can mix from now on.

I’ve never really thought of that, but my own belly certainly feels bigger after a hearty meal. Pellets suck up water, if you happen to spill some water onto pellets you’ll see how much they swell. I’ve accidentaly done that, and at first I couldn’t understand what that big pile of goo on the floor was, I thought my dog had thrown up, but it was just water on a few bunny-pellets.

Keep up the little tummy massages if you feel worried, it won’t hurt, mommy rabbits lick the bellies of their young to get their intestines moving so it’s not unnatural for them. May even strenghten the bond between you =)

I give her tummy rubs every time I pick her up
