Enclosure construction

I’m creating an indoor home for 2 mini bunnies in my lounge. It has a wooden floor which I want to protect. I want to create an enclosure so that I don’t have to worry about catching a bunny as I open the door. I was picturing an off cut of vinyl flooring and some kind of low perimeter fence to contain the bunnies.

Question is….what do I make the fence from and how do I fix it in place?

Cheap materials if possible…..

Any suggestions?

The galvanized wire fencing is a good low cost solution. Just make sure that the fencing you choose is appropriate for rabbits and not chicken wire. You use J Clips to connect the fence to itself, create corners or a door.

You can purchase an X Pen on Amazon for about the same price that the fencing will cost. Some of these even come with covers so you don’t have to worry about the bunnies jumping over it. You probably don’t need to worry about securing this to the floor since they are made for puppies and are pretty stable.

Would they be able to jump over a 65cm fence? They’re mini lion lops. Thanks for your help xxx

They can absolutely jump over 65 cm. not all rabbits will though, but I think a safe height is at least 100 cm. some say 5 ft (150 cm).

My 6lb lop, Pipkin, has been known to clear the settee, which I just measured at 90cm high, plus he had to cover the width, 65cm he could hop in his sleep

Hi again. I’m looking at X Pens – they look great! (Thanks for the suggestion) they come in 61cm, 76cm or 91cm high. Do you really think I need the tallest for mini bunnies who’re only going to weigh 3.5lb at most? Would the middle height be ok?

I found some hard wood flooring with easy attachments at Home Depot for only $17 for one box. It does have a bunch of panels in it. Then I bought a 32′ High heavy duty fence with a door at Amazon.com for $70. But There is plenty of really cheap fencing. I just liked how it had a door & was “heavy duty”. Im not sure how to post a pic or I would totally show you!

61cm is nothing to a rabbit – my New Zealand Red boy jumped over his 68cm high x-pen when he was about three months old and weighed around 2kg. We currently have a 91cm fence which he has yet to jump over, and he now weighs around 3,8kg at eight months old. I have no doubts that he would be capable of going over said fence if he wanted to, however – but I think it’s tall enough to deter him from trying!

I used a X Pen for my bun and to enforce him from jumping out, I bought a cheap sheet of galvanized metal to go over the top and just used binder clips to hold it in place. To protect my wood floors, I put on the bottom one of those floor protectors for computer desks where the computer chair goes. But some buns don’t like wood floors or solid surfaces from being slippery, mine just happened to like slippery surfaces so it worked out. Depending on how big you’re making the enclosure, dog crates will be fully enclosed. I kept a dog crate for large dogs at my parents’ home for when I needed them to bunny-sit.

I don’t have any newer photos that show the whole cage, but to show what I mean by putting the sheet of metal over the top, this was the best pic I had on hand. Since it has a top, we had created a second level in it for him too.
