Almost a month ago, I noticed my rabbit, Bambino, not moving around like normal. I took her out of her cage, let her move around a bit, and put her back. However, when I put her back, she started dragging her back legs. In a panic, I scooped her up and called my vet. Unfortunately, he was out of town, but I got in with a different vet. He took some X-rays of her and showed me the results. To him, it looked like she had a bladder infection. So, she was treated for that.

Two weeks later, she still wasn’t doing any better. I also noticed that she had a rumbly stomach. I gave her a tummy massage and some baby food, and those both seemed to help. I took her back to the vet, who did another X-ray on her. This one showed that she had nothing but air bubbles in her stomach and had a small amount of calcium deposits in her bladder. He had some blood work done and told me to keep up with the baby food and try some Pedialyte to help her with dehydration. (She had not been eating or drinking on her own, I had to feed her everything.) So, when I got home, I gave her the Pedialyte and some food. When I came back down to check on her about 30 minutes later, she had pulled most of the fur off her dewlap.

The next day, the vet called and told me the blood work showed she had chronic kidney failure. I told me the treatment options and said he’d let me think about it for a few days. One of my co-workers has rabbits and is a part of a local rescue group for rabbits. I told her everything and asked her opinion. She told me to schedule and appointment with her vet for a second opinion, which I did later in the day yesterday.

I came home last night and my brother was massaging Bambino’s stomach. He said that she farted a little and had even eaten some hay. I took her out again, gave her somr medicine and baby food and started to rub her stomach again. She lifted her tail and peed a little, which came out red and with a clump of what looked like jelly. Naturally, I start to panic. The red urine could be a result of the carrots I’ve been giving her, but the jelly-like stuff, I don’t know. Before I went to bed last night, I checked on her one more time. She hadn’t moved and was grinding her teeth very loudly.

This morning, my mother texted me on the way to work, saying Bambino wasn’t moving and was still grinding her teeth. My question is this: should I just get her put down? She’s about 8 years old and I really don’t want her to be in any more pain. Any help or suggestions are welcome!

I can’t advice you as to wether you should have her put down or not, but you do need to get her some pain medicine asap. She is most likely in a significant amount of pain. Poor little girl

8 years is an older bunny. I can’t tell you what you should do about letting her go but i agree that you need to give her meds for the pain and get her looked at again by the vet.
            Hugs.
