Hey all! I haven’t been on here for a while. However, I have moved in with my fiancé and his parents just for a couple months while my father buys a home and we will move back in with him. In our old home, Stanley stayed in my room, had an a/c and always interacted because he was in my bedroom.

Now we are at my fiancé’s house, and they will only allow him in the basement. I was wondering if this is a problem. It’s always cool down there. I read online that if it’s damp, it’s bad. How do I know if it’s damp down there versus dry? I don’t  know if it’s bad for his respiratory system or what.

He seems ok, a little annoyed, but overall ok. He’s eating drinking and pooping.

I really hate him not being in the room with us but its kinda out of our hands. Any Advice would be great. Thanks!

My rabbits are now in the basement (after we moved here) on purpose-and I love it. Ok it took getting used to-for years my rabbits were always next door to my bedroom meaning I could hear them at night. I definitely had panicked awakenings from nightmares at first, obviously I was worrying something would happen with them so-far-away! I’m an anxious person though! And they were fine and I adjusted.

If it’ ideal-it will depend on the house, the HVAC system, and the climate. If you are in Alaska, I doubt the basement would be doable. Our house has good circulation (new furnace and duct work), but the basement is 5-10 degrees cooler in the summer (it’s never over 20 down there) which is fantastic. I used to worry so much on hot days about them, but no more. In the winter it’s the same 20 (I keep the house temp at 23 in winter) so it’s perfectly warm enough in winter. But it’s a part finished basement, not drafty and it’s a walk out style basement with windows so it’s not very basementy

So in short depends on the house and the climate. Your move is temporary so if it’s less than ideal you can likely make it work-if it’s cool more bedding maybe? Shelter from a draft.

Im not really worried about the climate persay. It’s more the damp vs dry basement that I’m worried about. It stays cool down there. I’m in Massachusetts in the US so it’s pretty hot but it’s cool down there.

I read that if it’s damp down there it will mess with his nose and he’ll get very sick. It seems “dry” to me but I’m not sure how to tell. It does have the “basement” smell. Like I said it’ s only for about a month and then he’ll be back in my room in the new house. There’s not much I can do but I’m just hoping he’ll be ok. Thanks!

If you’re worried and want to be extra sure your bunny will be okay, maybe look into a dehumidifier to put by the pen, maybe a cheap air purifier as well? Those would be nice things to have around anyway once you’re back with your dad and the bunny can be in your room. I lived with my in laws a long time ago and they basically made it so I had to find my first rabbit a new home, one where she could actually be let out. It was really hard, but at least it’s just a few weeks and they said the basement is fine and not just outside or something(:

Damp basements are normally pretty obvious. It will smell musty and feel humid or clammy. If the basement requires a french drain or sump pump chances are it’s going to be damp.

Location is a good clue too. We live next to a river and our basement is quite damp. My father lives about a mile from us up at the top of a hill and his basement is dry, unless the toilet down there over flows.

If the basement is damp there is a simple fix though. Just get a dehumidifier. We use one in our basement and it makes a huge difference. http://www.sears.com/search=dehumidifier
