Snoopy is a 1 year and 4 month old Holland Lop rabbit. We bought him from a tiny pet store when he was 4 weeks old and have loved and cared for him ever since. We litter trained him in 2 days and is nearly perfect with using his litter box. However, within the last week or so, Snoopy has been urinating on his plastic shelf that he likes to lay and sleep on. Not only that, but I will walk in and see him sort of licking his urine from the shelf??? About 3 months ago, we took him to the vet for GI Stasis and he was completely cured (he simply wasn’t eating enough of his hay, but he is eating the proper amount now). During this time, he wouldn’t eat or drink anything so we had to force feed him with fiber according to the vet. She did a full exam then and never mentioned any other possible health problems about Snoopy. He has never been neglected in any way, he is a part of the family! So I just wonder why he all of a sudden started doing this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I found this old thread about a rabbit drinking urine: https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/126042/Default.aspx (Read only, do not respond to this old thread.)

It does seem like it’s sth that some rabbits will do, but it’s not a symptom of some particular illness.

Jenny drinks hers, I asked her reasonably rabbit savy vet about it, wondering should I get a salt lick or something. She wasn’t concerned, and said no, nothing to worry about, as long as she eats a varied diet.

I have heard of rabbits drinking urine, and that it’s not a cause of concern. But if a rabbit is peeing in places that aren’t normal for him, it could be due to lazy litter box habits or that could be a sign of a urinary infection. Watch your rabbit closely and make sure that he isn’t straining to pee or dribbling pee. Hopefully, it’s just a new habit that he has started, but if you are concerned that there could be something wrong, have him checked out by the vet.
