Rosie is approaching 6 months. We’ve been giving her about a half a cup of pellets a day, she’s 3 pounds and so I know they is plenty. But since she is a baby I figured she needs the food while she is growing .
We went from free feeding to the half cup and she thinks she is starving. I don’t know if she’s just not ready or if I have created a monster by letting her eat what she wants.

Right now she gets a heaping cup of greens, a tablespoon of fruit (usually blueberries) and unlimited water and hay.

How did you cut back the pellets? When we try she basically has a fit and destroys her cage, I can’t have a litter flinging rabbit every time she runs out of food, but at the same time, I don’t think she knows better.

If she is 3lbs at 6 months, then my guess is she’s not going to be a very big bunny. Her growth is probably already slowing. You can cut back on pellets any time now. If she’s a piggy, you can gradually reduce the amount so she doesn’t feel suddenly deprived. Some bunnies are just whacky for pellets, so begging is always to be expected. Is she a good hay eater?

What kind of rabbit is Rosie? Such a cute name! Smaller rabbits generally stop growing earlier than bigger ones, so yes, you can definitely cut back on the pellets. My rabbit is 3.5 pounds and about the same age as yours is, and I’m in the middle of transitioning him onto his adult pellets. I kept cutting his pellets in half until I reached the adult portion. Fortunately, Hugo wasn’t too bothered, but I’m sure Rosie will calm down once she adjusts to having less pellets.

            Is she on junior pellets?

She’s a mini-lop but our vet said she’s a big girl! I’d say she is wacky for her pellets, last night she ripped apart her litter box and all of the paper on the bottom of her cage, THEN was biting the bars.

She eats hay fairly well but prefers her greens and pellets over it.  I started her on the Oxbow adult pellets this week, she seems to be adjusting well but not to the recommended amount which I think its between a 1/4 and a 1/2 cup of food per day.

You may want to check into Sherwood Forest pellets. They have 2 kinds of pellets for adult rabbits. It seems the one kind allows for some extra pellets for those pellet wackos. There are a couple threads about these on here.
