Since Iost my 10 1/2 week old bunny I’m so scared it’s going to happen again. How do I get this feeling to go away? I came home and I saw pee on her house and it was like milky yellow color and I’m worried now, she’s running in her out of it in the water dish on top I think the cage is too small. How do I know if my bunny starts to look bad if something happens. I don’t want to lose any other bunny

As bunny owners, we all worry about our babies. It’s normal. But at the same time, you can’t let the fear of losing your bunny consume you. You should spend your time enjoying her. I think once she has settled in and you are familiar with her personality and little behaviors, you will know what is normal for her and what is not.

As for the pee, that’s normal. The cloudiness is calcium, they will pee out any excess calcium. Their bodies are very good at doing that. Rabbit pee comes in a rainbow of colors from yellow to orange to red. Diet causes their pee to change color, so it isn’t surprising to see orange pee after they eat veggies with a lot of carotene.

Thank you for your reply. She running around binking so I think she’s happy. I’m feeding her nothing but Timothy hay and junior rabbit pellets now and no fresh veggies yet. I was told to wait. She was eating only hay before but now she discovered the pellets and likes those a lot

That would be why her pee is yellow and the calcium is probably from her pellets since junior pellets contain alfalfa. I just wanted to mention the rainbow pee since we get a lot of worried bunny owners asking about orange/red pee. I imagine she will be getting veggies once she’s older.

Of course when she is older yes. Can these pellets cause bloat? I’m wondering if my last bunny just wasn’t good to begin with cause she was never ever active and this one is super active

I think it’s normal, the fear you’re experiencing after you’ve had a loss. When I have lost a rabbit, I begin to think about when my others go and how I would cope with that.

For me, having rabbits has been a huge learning curve. Having a prey species as a pet is different and we continually have to learn to “read” them.

Binky Bunny has a lot of info pages if you haven’t checked them out yet. The House Rabbit Society is another great resource.

I think it’s a great idea to bookmark or print some info to have on hand for when a rabbit does become unwell. Also, putting together a first aid kit is a good idea. Plus putting together a list of contact info for rabbit savvy vets including out-of-hours options.

This is a good article and contains some links to some well known articles by Dana Krempels. Worth a read.

Your little bun sounds like they’re doing well. I’m sorry you had to go through the experience of losing one.

I really appreciate the kind words everyone. Just want to make sure she’s ok. The red orange pee kind of worried me. When could I start giving her veggies

12 weeks or so. You’ll want to start with something basic, like romaine, and introduce new veggies one at a time.

EDIT: I saw your other question above. When you say bloat, do you mean gas or stasis? Pellets should not cause any issues if your bunny is healthy. From what you’ve told us (throughout the forum), it sounds like your previous bunny may have had something wrong with her. She was young, so she could have had a genetic condition that led to her being ill.

Ok cool so reddish orange urine is ok?

Yes, it’s normal. Their pee changes color when they eat different foods. Carotene and other plant pigments make it orange/red. It doesn’t hurt anything, but their body does get rid of it in that way.

Ok good. And she seems to be peeing every hour or so. Is this normal?

Depends on how much she is drinking, I suppose.

It may be like with young dogs (and small children for that matter), they have to pee like all the time because their bladders can’t hold a lot of pee. Bladder control isn’t fully developed yet.
It should be small wees, if she drinks like a maniac and pees a river, that would of course not be normal.

When you’ve lost an animal you tend to worry a lot about your other pets, I know I’ve done that. I think that’s very natural for humans, it’s like a super-vigilance we’ve evolved to prevent the loss of more loved ones. It may serve a good purpose, but it’s of course not a particularly nice feeling and it can become totally overwhelming. As LBJ says, you mustn’t let your worry consume you and take away the fun. (Which is an easy thing to say and a much harder thing to do.)
I think it does seem like your first rabbit had a pre-existing condition, and that was very unfortunate but not sth you could have known or have had any control over.
