My parents will get my rabbit neutered by Christmas, but I’m worried is he could die under the anesthetic?

There is always a risk with anesthesia, but unless your rabbit has medical problems that would make the procedure risky, the risk is next to nothing. Neutering is typically the safest thing for a rabbit. I don’t think you should be worried!

I agree with HappyHollandDays. Typically spaying a female rabbit has a higher risk than neutering a male rabbit since spaying is an abdominal surgery and neutering is mostly external. Rabbits, like horses, have very fibrous anatomies. This means that when undergoing surgery if the vet touches the stomach to the abdominal wall they can become attached. This should not be an issue with a rabbit experienced vet. With this being said female rabbits that are not fixed have an extraordinarily high rate of developing uterine cancer around the age of four while fixed rabbits can live 7-12 years. So the risks are well worth it for the overall health of your rabbit.

Short answer – yes, it’s possible. But as HappyHollandDays points out, the risk is very very small. A healthy rabbit is expected to make it through just fine, so I wouldn’t let that worry you. If you want to be really vigilant, you can have the vet do blood tests to make sure everything is functioning okay. But really, you shouldn’t worry.

EDIT: As bunny owners, we tend to worry about our babies. Something like surgery is scary and we all worry about our bunnies come spay/neuter time.

Like LBJ10 mentioned, a precaution is to have your vet do pre-anaesthetic bloodwork before the surgery. This checks kidney function and other things to make sure your bunny is healthy enough for the anaesthetic. This is definitely reccomended for older buns or ones who have had health problems.

For most bunnies, neutering is really not a big deal and they recover very well.

They can die, but it’s very unlikely. My bun is getting spayed literally right now and I’m a little worried about her to.
