Hi! I recently got a little holland lop and I’m hoping to get a male someday (both will be fixed). I would like to adopt an older male (2 years or older would be ideal) from our shelter. The bunnies that come through our shelter aren’t fixed and we don’t have a rescue for rabbits here, so he would likely not be neutered when we initially bring him home. So I know our girl will need to be spayed before we do. I’m planning to get her spayed around 4 or 5 months depending on when the vet says it is best.

I heard from someone at our local shelter that they don’t recommend bringing in older bunnies when you have a younger one at home, is this true? Also, when would be ideal to bring another home for our girl? And would it be better to adopt a boy of a certain age to make bonding them easier?

        Thank you!

It would be best do adopt a boy of the same age when she’s already spayed so one won’t die as soon when they bond.

My Tenzin is only 6 months and Bumi is 2 1/2 … 2 years old is not old for a rabbit. But bonding two young individuals is often easier.

I don’t think age matters too much as long as you are not bonding a very young (teenage age) bun with a senior only because the youngster would be much more active than the older bun and this could cause problems. But I really don’t see a problem with bonding buns a few years apart. The most important thing is that they are both spayed/neutered. And, if possible, let your bun pick his own mate.
