Okay so for those who haven’t heard, my Flemish Giant, Chom, is currently living away from home. My best friend is bringing him back to me soon, but she is most likely flying.

Delta, and united both allow rabbits. Yay. For Delta we will need to ship him as cargo. United he can be a carry on, possibly.

I’m leaning more towards Delta myself.

But I do need to know a good travel crate size for him. That way I can set up the reservation.

I would go for United. I wouldn’t like the idea of a rabbit going through all of that. I’d rather bring him as a carry on, so he can be near someone familiar.

Okay so my friend is not able to come and visit. Her boss wouldn’t give her the time off. Butthole.

So instead, another friend will be driving out there to get Chom, and bring him back for me thankfully. Which I’m very excited for.

Well, that’s a better option than the flying. Truthfully, I think a rabbit would be pretty freaked out by a plane. How long will the drive be?

About nine hours. But Chom used to go for shows all the time, so long driving trips are nothing new to him. He had been trained to lay on a small mat on the seat, and not move. ((He always gets surrounded by pillows and whatnot, god forbid in case of a crash. But no cage is big enough for him that we have found yet.))

                  Isn’t Chom a Giant variety?

                    He is a Flemish Giant.

Recent weigh in from the vet shows 24 pounds. He is ginormous though.

Good lord. Flemish crossed with elephant maybe? Lol. I’ve never gotten to see one in person. Just the average sized ones.

That’s really the one rule my bf has about rabbits. I can’t get anything that might turn out to be bigger than me lol.

Well I’m 5 foot 4, and he reaches from my shoulder to my knee fully stretched out… So yeah…

Cages for him is hard to find.

So, the only option is a dog kennel for like an XL breed of dog then? Like something for a husky?

He balks even at that size of a cage. Chom enjoys spreading himself out, and it just causes a hassle, especially with moving about in a smaller car..

We gave up on the cage, and seat trained him in cars.

That is awesome There’s a lady my dad has seen driving around his town, that has a rabbit that sits on her shoulder when she drives. It’s amazing the things people train their bunnies to do.

Speckles goes with us to the farmers market every week. All the vendors love seeing her. And she has now taken to perching her back feet on my chest, her front feet on my shoulder, and raise herself up above all to see everyone, so she can spot her favorite people from a distance. ((It’s not uncommon for her to get a slice of fruit from one man, who she loves seeing.))

How did you train them to do this? I would LOVE to take my bunny to places.

Have someone drive around, with you and the bun in the backseat. Bring some water, favorite veggies, and some sweets for them, and a carpet square/blanket that you always use only for car rides.

Put the bun on the blanket on the seat, and calm and kept still with the feeding of yummy snacks. Repeatedly. Non stop. If they try to hop off, or explore, bribe back onto the blanket with the sweets, and massive amounts of pets.

And just repeat daily, stretching it out to be longer and longer. First day should be like 10-20 minutes depending on how lazy or impatient your bun is. Chom is lazy so we started at 20 minutes. Once he started realizing what to do, I lessened the treats and attention. And he just chills on his little carpet square, and doesn’t move until I get out of the car.

WOW. That is amazing. I’ll have to try this.
