so my next door neighbors got a white rabbit a couple of weeks ago and I’m concerned about it not being cared for properly. I have never had a rabbit or anything other than a dog so I’m not sure if any of this is normal or dangerous for the rabbit. my neighbors are also from China and speak very little English and i don’t know if they know how to care for the rabbit. they leave it tied to a stake in the ground all day i think most days. the rope is pretty long but I don’t think it’s long enough. one weekend they left the rabbit outside all day and night with no water. I didn’t see any hay but he may have already eaten it. I kept checking to see if they came home that Saturday and I went over with carrots, raspberry leaves, a strawberry, and water (i did this Sunday too). I was also nervous about him being out all night because of coyotes and other animals. today, he (although I’m unsure of the gender) kept trying to lay in the bushes just a couple inches further than where the leash allowed. he kept jumping in the air and it kept getting tangled around his legs. I went in their yard to go untangle him and when I did it sounded like he was whimpering and his eyes were bulging. I also brought him some raspberry leaves because I had seen anybody go out and feed him but he didn’t want to eat them. I assume this was because he was scared and freaking out that he couldn’t escape the collar. I am wondering if there is anything I should do or if there is anything I should know in order to help the rabbit. please help! thanks.

If he is tied to a stake, then that is very dangerous. Not only is he vulnerable to predators, he could seriously injure himself by jumping and flailing about. Do you have a rabbit rescue near you that could help? Or do you have an animal control department? I believe this would fall under neglect (if not cruelty) and animal control may be able to intervene. Otherwise, you could ask your neighbors if you can have the bunny. If they say yes, then you can find him a new home (if you don’t wish to keep him).

Are they home now ? Go in with a carrier or box. I would say he is not intended for loving if you know what I mean. If you have to untie the tether round his head retie it so it looks like he slipped away.

While Roberta,s intentions are good, please just alert your local animal control dept. instead, and immediately. Your neighbors may be breaking the law, but you don,t want to, nor do you want a confrontation to escalate. Every town has a control officer from their nearest town or city that covers where you live, and they work fast to get to the animal and stop any abuse. If it is against the law, they will rescue the bunny, possibly fining the owners. You can call anonymously for the sake of peace in the neighborhood.

I agree with calling animal control and possibly confronting the owners. If they are still no where to be seen, try to give the bun some water and food. Just leave it out for the poor bun, and possibly give it a cardboard box to hide/escape the elements. If the neighbors confront you or something, just let them know that you’re worried and just trying to help. I wouldn’t be rude to them, or yell at them (even though they deserve it), especially since you are on their property when you visit the bun. Just be careful!

Yes… it was not right to suggest stealing him. But please do get some help for him.

Don’t steal him, but try to body language your neighbors into taking care of him. Call animal control and submit a complaint about not having food, water, and protection from the elements. This is not good.
