Gina and Jenny are due to be spayed in just under 12 hours.

The vet is experienced in bunny spays, but I won’t settle now till they are awake and eating post op

Been home two hours. Gina has wolfed down loads of dandelion leaves, fresh from the garden, which the vets said would be the best thing for their tums. She’s just started eating some hay so fingers crossed. Main concern with Gina is that she keeps grooming underneath, and its hard to see if she is just grooming the shaved skin, which must feel pretty weird, or the incision, which the vet said to watch out for, and stop if either did it too much. I do have a plastic collar, but don’t want to stress her, or stop her eating her cecotropes.

Jenny has finally nibbled her way through a few dandelion leaves, but I will feel happier when she eats a decent amount…

Great that Gina eats so willingly! Collars are stressful for bunnies but if she’s pulling at her stitches, you have no choice but to put it on her. She shouldn’t wear it all the time of course, but you can’t constantly watch her either.
I hope Jenny soon will eat more, but that she’s eaten at all is still very good since the spay wasn’t long ago.

If it’s one if those soft collars and long enough, you might be able to put it on backwards. That might deter her a bit. Or try a belly band made from an old sock.

Has she got visible stitches or did they use glue?

The stitches are internal only and will dissolve, they said they’d done a flap on the outside, so I guess that was glued? Its hard to see if she’s actually grooming there or just around it, or possibly even eating cecotropes. With her being a dwarf, the whole underside isn’t that big. She has just produced a single nice round dropping, which at least shows something is working its way through, even if not much. I’ve lined both cages with puppy training pads, to keep both girls dry, but it has an added advantage that its easy to see any droppings, puddles or if their wounds bleed.

Jenny has eaten a couple more dandelions. I’ve just made a pulp from some pellets and left that near her in a small bowl, as recommended on a post op care web page I found. Hopefully that might tempt her, she normally seems to really like the pellets. She is not a happy girl…

Gina still doing ok, given the day she’s had.

Poor Jenny isn’t looking too good. She is huddled in the corner whimpering. Just rang vets, who said its too soon for her to get another pain relief injection, so I’ve wrapped her in a fleece blanket, with a warm wheat bag beside her and we’ll see how the next couple of hours go. I can take her in if need be any time through the night. On the plus side, she has peed and there are maybe a dozen droppings. Guess its going to be a long, sleepless night…

Poor little girl. So good that you can take her in if you need to. Keeping her warm is important (as you know, of course). Yay for pee + droppings.

Jenny finally perked up enough to come out from under the blankets. She drank some water and ate a little cucumber n carrot that were cut into nice small bite size pieces. Its 20 to midnight UK time, so I’ve wrapped her back in the blankets and set an alarm for two hours time… fingers crossed she’d just got a bit cool and the blankets will help her recover.

Gina had ate all her cucumber n carrot and happily accepted another portion of each, normally carrot is a rare treat…

Its been a long night, keeping checking her and making sure she stayed warm under the blankets. Worth it as she’s made it through the night and looks quite alert now, and has happily taken a good size piece of carrot and chomped it down. She wasn’t so happy when I checked her tum, thankfully both girls wounds look healthy, no swelling or inflammation etc.

Both girls also eating some fresh dandelions

Really glad I lined both cages with training pads, as its easy to see that both girls have peed at least twice, and produced maybe couple of dozen healthy looking droppings. Really want to change them asap, to keep the girls clean and dry, and also so I can continue to keep an eye on output. I’ve been told to check the wound sites 3 times a day so maybe can change the pads during the middle of the day check, when both my sons will be awake and there will be extra hands to help.

Thanks Gina continuing to heal nicely

Jenny still struggling to keep warm enough, so its been another night of warming blankets. With the boys now out in the garden, I thought I’d try bringing Jenny’s outdoor run, which she’s already made clear she really likes, in, and put it down on an old duvet, with her blanket on top. She seemed to approve, as she lay down for a few minutes, then got up, groomed the blanket, ate some pellets, drank and went back to the pellets. Hopefully this will keep her body temp up through the day, so she’ll be better set for the night.

It means she and Gina can see each other, but there is a 2-3 inch gap between the cages, so they can get used to each other but not get too close.

Picture is poor focus as the flash bothers Jenny, so turned the flash off…

checked both girls tums, healing nicely, though Gina tried to bite when I checked hers not to break the skin, just to express her annoyance with me, I think…

Given Jenny is making it clear she way prefers to be in the A frame rather than the cage, I’ve move the A frame into the living-room, so she is now the other side of Gina’s cage, but I can keep the boys right away at night, as they sleep in the dining room. Gina can now stay in here for as long as needed, and she should stay warm enough at night. Hopefully we will both now sleep tonight!

If she’s eating and drinking I believe she must be be doing okay.

I teared up a little when I saw their photos. They reminded me of my bridge bunny Jelly and his mum, Maia. I adopted him and my friend had his mother & brother.

Being on the duvet seems to be working, as far as keeping Jenny’s body temp up is concerned. Its a warm day, and I was worried she’d overheat, but I just checked with one hand, and a slice of carrot in the other, and her ears now feel a nice temp. She is very small and that, combined with being a bit underweight still from living rough, probably hasn’t helped. Think tonight, I will heat a quarter of a single duvet up by rolling a heated wheat bag across it, and put that over the top of the A frame, to help keep the air around her that little bit warmer through the night.

jerseygirl, I will give them an extra treat in honour of Jelly <3 they keep reminding me of our first rescue bunny, Chelsey. Although they don't look like her, they still keep bringing up memories…

Chelsey was rescued from being kept in a garage with ferrets in other cages. She must have been in constant fear, but she had three happy years with us, before crossing the rainbow bridge quietly in her sleep.

Jenny is still a good temp, and seems comfy enough snug on the blanket n duvet.

Put another piece of duvet over, so she is in a kind of duvet burrow

she’s been eating quite well today, and that will help her keep her body temp up too. So hopefully, everyone will get a full nights sleepzzzzz

she seems fine this morning, ready to take some greens from me, and she has drunk quite a bit overnight and has left a nice big wet patch and a decent pile of droppings on the training pad hopefully it’ll be plain sailing from now, just keeping an eye on the temp, but i think I’ll keep her on the duvet, given she’s made it clear she likes it, unless she shows any sign of overheating.

given how the girls are today, I thought I’d see how they felt about some floor time. Gina got the dining room, and Jenny the living room, as its way too soon to risk trying them together.

Both welcomed the chance to stretch their legs, though neither stayed out for more than five minutes.

Got a picture of Jenny on the way out

you can just see the paws as she went. she is a speedy little bun

she did a very tiny binky, so she is definitely feeling better and happy enough with her new home
