Measuerment of a 2 x 4 cage in cm ? Is it a big and good cage ?

Centimetres? No. Do you mean metres? The PDSA says bunnies need at least 6ft x 2ft (182cm x 60cm) plus tall enough for them to stand up on their back legs. Really, it depends on the size of the bunny and how much time they will have out of their cage.

One thing to keep in mind is the three hop rule – your bunny needs to be able to hop three times across the cage once they’re grown (otherwise you’ll need to buy another cage when they outgrow a smaller one), stretch out fully to rest and have room for toys, food, water and a litter tray. But this is really the absolute minimum and it wouldn’t be healthy for a rabbit to spend significant amounts of time in a cage that meets the minimums.

My bunnies really have the absolute minimum for cage size but they get lots of free time outside of their cage (Mr Roger was completely free roam and we’re working out how much supervision Fred and George need). Between us, our schedules mean that we are able to be home most of the day to supervise them.

Lots of people have multilevel cages if they need to save space, create DIY cages or use dog crates and X-Pens to give their buns more room to roam.

When we bought our first rabbit (together/since poor childhood ownership) we bought a cage from pets at home. The store we bought him from didn’t have any larger cages – though we hassled and hassled them over it. Our newest buns came from the same chain but from a branch that sold much bigger cages.

We intended to keep our bunny free range, so his cage was a tiny 95cm x 57cm x 46cm. He was free roam 24/7, excluding room checks which happened maybe once every other month at most. It is no longer sold for rabbits, which is good.

Our present buns are also dwarf breeds and they’ve not been shut away for more than 6 hours (overnight). We had/have to leave them for an extended period last night/today/tomorrow, so we moved them to the part of the kitchen we could reliably section so they had considerably more room for the night.

The RSPCA recommends that for two medium sized bunnies, the cage should be a minimum of 152.4cm x 60cm x 75.2cm BUT this cage size also needs to be connected to a larger ‘run’ where the bunnies can exercise.

              Based on this I’d say a cage of 400cm x 200cm/4m x 2m would be appropriate.

Many people say buns should be allowed to free roam for at least 4 hours a day with a cage that size, they could probably get away with less but unless they have a bunny friend they’d be very lonely.

My cage is no longer listed as a size for bunnies, I’ve discovered. I’m not posting the size because I don’t want anyone to think it would be appropriate for anything less than near constant free-roaming.

Right now my bunn has a really small cage and im thinking of building an nic 2 x 4 but my wish is to have her free roam the whole day and just keep her in the cage at night , but the problem is shes not spayed so she poops and pees all over the house when shes out. I cant get her spayed cause im quite young and dont have my own money to get her spayed. Any tips or tricks that i could try to stop her from peeing or pooping everywhere ?

Hm, I know some bunnies have a strong preference for soft materials so restricting their access to those could help. Otherwise, I’ve heard it’s quite difficult to fully toilet train neutered buns.

I thought they become easier to litter train after the spay or neuter..? Our house is fully tiled and she’s not allowed in the one carpeted room in our house. Sometimes she just pees a tiny bit amount like a little bit bigger than a bottle cap under the sofa in the corner. What does it mean ?

Not sure on the cage measurements but our bun is completely litter trained. He has been since he got spayed. He does have the occasional accident. Like tonight he made it back in the cage but not to his litter box. Training took a long time we started before he was fixed. Any time things are stressful and he has issues for a few days. The stress from the vet to get fixed set us back about a week.

Before getting him neutered was he fully litter trained ?

Nope. Before he was neutered he was only good about using his box when I was home. My hubby is less diligent than I am and our bunny would take advantage.

My bun was completely litter trained by 2 months old and now shes about 8 months old ,but a month ago she started having accidents during her free roam time. The weird thing is she doesnt have any accidents in her cage!!

Hi Reem. If you notice her peeing in the same spot when she is free roam you could put a litter box in that area for her.

I meant unneutered, whoops. (As in, your problem may reduce post-neuter.)

I actually put the litterbox where she was peeing and it worked !! Now the problem is the poop , on some days she poops in one area on other days she’ll be running and there will be a trail of poop behind her.
