Im new to the forum and I am also new to owning a rabbit. I got him today, though i was not exactly expecting to get him. I saved him from deplorable conditions where he lived in a wire cage he could hardly turn around in, in a garage that warmed up to 90 in the sun and they were feeding him jalapeños. Hes very skinny with solid irregular poop. Before anyone jumps the gun he is going to the vet but unfortunately they cant see him until Wednesday. Iv given him fluid sub-q (i do it at work so no big deal) and have given him some water oraly with a medication syringe. Hes in a very large cage now with fresh food and water. My question is until he goes to the vet is there anything else i could do for him? Im not sure of his breed if that matters or not perhaps i could post a picture and someone qould know? Thanks for the help.

As long as he is comfortable and safe, I don’t think there is a whole lot you can do. Did he seem dehydrated? Is that why you did the sub-q fluids? My only other thought would be to avoid giving him too much food too soon if he is really skinny like you said. He might want to eat a lot if he’s hungry, so make sure you’re spreading it out so he doesn’t eat too much in one sitting.

Thank you for saving this poor rabbit!
I agree with LBJ on the food. If he’s been deprived of food he might want to gorge himself and that could be very, very dangerous. Give him mostly hay to begin with I think. Then you can gradually start to fatten him up.
Other than that, I don’t know, check for obvious wounds of course and clean them, but you’ve done that already, I’m sure.

Best of luck at the vet!

LBJ: He hadnt been peeing normally from what i could tell, to be honest im not completley sure what normal is, given his living conditions, i thought it was safer to treat for dehydration than to not.

And to both of you, thanks for the advice. He has hay, but i filled his food bowl up so i guess il take it out for now.

If he isn’t trying to gorge himself, then it is okay for him to have the food. I just worry that if he is starving that he would try to eat way too much in one sitting.

It just makes me sick that someone would treat him so poorly. Thank you for saving this poor starving bunny.

                    Thank you for taking him!

Just going by look of his ears, I’m thinking he may have English angora in him or be a very young one??
I can’t think of other breeds that have the fuzzy ears like that…
Otherwise I would have pegged him as a lionhead rabbit.

Would love updates on how this little one is doing.

How did the vet visit go?

The vet went well, she said that he doesnt have any overly concerning conditions other than being skinny. I was told to fatten em up and make sure he has proper nutrition. He already seems like hes doing better.

                            Thanks to those who commented

                              Good to hear!
Did she have an idea of what age he might be?
How are his feet looking? No damage from the wire cage?

Food wise, I recommend oat and wheat hay. Supplemented with some alfalfa hay. Good to encourage good hay eating habits, especially if he’s a long fur breed.

Their thinking between 2 and 3. His feet are good no ulceration or anything. Thanks for asking.

He looks so sweet. So happy that you can give him a good home. Be careful with giving a bunny liquids with a syringe. They can aspirate very easily since they do not have the ability to vomit. If you are comfortable giving sub q fluids this is a much safer approach.

                                      Good luck and welcome!
