        Hey!

anybody here clicker training there bunny? I’ve started training Socks, but its getting kinda difficult. I don’t know what to use for treats! she likes carrots, oxbow treats, vegies, and homemade treats, but she doesn’t always eat them out of my hand. That doesn’t work very well when your trying to associate a click with a treat. What do I do!?

Pellets are the best treats, I’ve found. Most bunnies go crazy for them. You should take them out of her usual daily feed, preferably when she’s hungry. If she won’t eat out of her hand you could either try to teach her to do that first (if you’re really concerned about it), or (easier and works fine) drop them on the floor in front of her when she does the right thing.

It’s actually very good for bunnies to ‘earn’ their food through recreational activities because it gives them a sense of purpose and keep them entertained (and therefore not destroying your belongings).

Lola – after you click just pop the treat down in front of Socks, it doesn’t ‘have’ to come from your hand. As long as immediately after the noise of the click they receive a treat and that is only while you are ‘charging’ the clicker up. Once Socks knows that click = treat, it isn’t as important for the treat to be presented right this second. The idea of the click is not only to mark the right behaviour but to also bridge the time between when the behaviour occurred and when you can get the treat to the bunny (dog/cat etc).

And while you are working on that as Paradigm said also work on getting Socks to take treats out of your hand.

Paradigm, Lee- I am training her on grass outside because they live outside for the summer-do you think that makes a difference? Also, the bunnies don’t go nuts for pellets. but maybe if I do it at feeding time and out of her normal amount of pellets, she might like them more?

I clicker trained my rabbit a bit. I started off buying a small bag of really thin carrot slices. He was kind of iffy about them. But whenever I give him a treat I’ll use the clicker before I give it to him. I’m not actively trying to train him, still working on associating the click with treats.
