Hey guys! I just woke up and looked at blossom and she was pulling lots and lots of fur from her body (you can’t see bald patches but I could hear her ripping it out) I always thought when they pulled fur it was from the dew lap not the body? Anyway I’m panicking because she hasn’t spat it out – she’s either eating it or holding it in her mouth!! I can see tufts of fur hanging out her mouth so I think it’s all in there – I caught belle with lots of fur in her mouth once and just pulled it all out. My issue is that she has been holding it for five mins and isn’t comfortable enough with me for me to try and get it out! I tried she growled! Now as I’m typing this she just buried her head under her blanket and I can hear her chomping – I’m hoping its part of the spit out process!!! I’m panicking so much because she still doesn’t really eat hay and if she swallows it there will be a mix of rabbit muesli and fur in her little tummy!!! Help me ?!

Okay she just came out and there is a missive pile of fur on the floor – I’m still panicking a little because why would she be building a nest like that? I’m hoping it a phantom!!!!

Sounds like it. What’s her history? Any possibility she was with a buck before she came to you? :/

They’ll pull fur from dewlap, belly and around hind end.

Edit: I just sped read your previous posts about her. Could you contact previous owner to check she hasn’t been with a buck or if she’s done this before?

For the last year she has just been neglected in a boiler room – I just picked her up on Monday night. I’m not sure much about her background other than she was abused and neglected for a year. I’m thinking her owner before him took a little more care because she has only had one accident outside the litter tray – suggesting she has been litter trained before. The abusive owner didn’t even give her a litter tray so I know it wasn’t him that trained her.
I really don’t think he had her with another rabbit but I’ve asked my friend to find out for me. Is it strange for her to have a phantom pregnancy in such unusual surroundings? Especially when she is still not comfortable around humans? Or could it be that this house is so much more comfortable than the last one she was in she thinks it’s the perfect time for babies?

As a little side note both my bunnies will be getting spayed once Blossom settles in so hopefully there will be no more phantoms to come!

From her behaviour went you met her, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was already entering a false pregnancy.

It reminded me of when I met Maple. She was very timid and vocal and would pounce if approached. She had a litter a week after I brought her home. She was quite different after. Less of the fear and no growling.

Do you know how long they last usually? Belle only lasted about a week both times. Is there anything I can do to make her feel more comfortable/stop? I’m seeing some more progress with feeding her basil and petting her head but do you think I should stop while she’s doing this?

It’s sounds like she’s coping fine with your interactions with her. I don’t think you need stop. The fur pulling is last stage so you should see it start to resolve pretty soon.

                    I pm’d you some info I found.

Her body may respond to good healthy food, nice safe place, few predators. It would be possible I guess for her to have a surge of all kinds of hormones. Kind of like when you neglect a house-plant then suddenly gives it water and it goes into bloom.

Bunnies aren’t plants though so obviously I’ve very little scientific support for this theory.

Haha that was kind of my thinking Bam – loving the plant comparison!

I tried to reply to your pm jersey girl but my internet is being really weird and the browser keeps freezing. Thanks so much for all the help!

No worries. I’m just glad you were able to read mine. I probably could have posted it here but I wasn’t sure.

Lots of people having trouble with the message feature at the moment.

Guys now belle is making a nest too! I have no option but to have them in the same room – but it seems like that is what is triggering their false pregnancies?

It’s well known that women that reside together sync their periods after a while, and the theory is it’s to do with pheromones. Maybe it’s sth similar that’s going on with your bunnies?

Maybe! Belle had her last false pregnancy when I put a fresh blanket in her cage – I just put a fresh blanket in there the other night and she’s doing it again – maybe it was actually her that set Blossom off! I’m going to let Belle see Blossom and see how she reacts. I posted a topic about it but so far no responses so I’m just going to let her have a look about Blossoms cage.

i read your thread in the bonding-forum just now, and I think both bunnies know there’s another bunny, they have a very acute sense of smell. Just make sure the bunnies can’t reach each other through the grid that separates them: they can hurt each other badly.

Yeah I won’t let them touch each other at all and I’ll be hovering right above them to make sure!

Roberta had this happen with 2 of her rabbits. Mother and daughter.
