        Hello!
Well I’m new to the forum. I have a 1 year and 1 month old bunny. His name is cinder and he’s pure black. This month I realized him shedding crazy. I’m not sure if this is normal or not. But I started to brush him and pull out the lose hair, and today I realized that he has some hair on the back of him that goes in. So I was brushing him and than I wanted to look at the hair so I picked him up and noticed 2 somewhat big bald spots. There’s no hair there and I’m afraid he’s gonna lose the rest of his hair on his bum cause there’s a ton more shedding. I’m not sure what cause these or what I can do. But if there’s anything I can put on it, please ,et me know. If you could help at all it would mean a lot to me. I also can post pictures if you ask. Thank you in advance

Bunnies can shed so heavily they get bald spots without anything being wrong. If the skin looks fine and smooth, no dandruff etc, it’s likely just normal heavy shedding. You don’t have to do anything, hair will start to grow back within days.

Ok. Thank you! Is there anything I can get to put on it , from getting all scaby? Or no? I hope it’s just heavy shedding. I have never saw this or herd of this before thanks again

I upload pics like this: Click edit on your latest post. Then click Insert image. The image can’t be larger than 500 Kb.

If that doesn’t work for you, there’s more info on uploading pics in the subforum called “Technical Stuff”.

I can’t see your pictures, please try again. Choose insert image, not create thumbnail. And make sure size isn’t bigger than 500 Kb.

Here is some info on molting: http://petcaretips.net/pet-rabbit-shedding-brushing.html

The important thing is how the skin in the bald patches look. If it’s at all crusty, flaky, red/irritated, you should contact a vet. It could be a parasite, which is easily fixed with the right meds, most often Revolution (selamectin).

If the skin is all smooth and fur is starting to grow back, this may very well be what’s known as a coat blow, when a rabbit sheds his fur in clumps. You should brush him daily and pluck off as much loose hair as you can or he will get it into his stomach when he cleans himself.

Yes his skin is smooth. I’m thinking it’s because he’s shedding so much right now. I can’t seem to upload the pictures. It says there over 500kb. But I’m not sure what that means

Could the bald spots be his testicles?

The 500kb thing is about the size. The picture is just too big, not in inches but amount of memory it takes. You can either resize it or reduce its resolution.

UPDATE: so the hair grew back in, it took a couple of days. I figured out that it was from shedding so much. It grew back is his normal hair and there’s not shedding there. But I’m still gonna brush him everyday. Thanks so much for all of your help

Thank you for the update, Cindermybunny! Great to hear that he’s getting new fur on the bald spots! Brushing a bunny every day during shedding is a very good thing to do.

UPDATE 2: so I found the bald spots after looking really hard? i thought the hair grew back , but it did not. I’m still not sure what to do.

Are the spots still completely bald? Not even the tiniest bit of re-growth? Like a fine velvety stubble? It takes a while before the fur grows to its normal length.

Nope nothing. And I’m kinda getting really concerned, because in December (2014) he got super sick. And it took a month before he was better. We had to force feed him for a month and he was cold (his body) so I don’t want to go back to that. I’m slaps not brushing him just because I don’t know if the rest of his hair will fall out.

The hair that falls out when you brush him is already lose, it doesn’t fall off because of the brushing. What type of illness did he have in December 2014? Was it tummy trouble or sth else?

If you are convinced this isn’t just normal shedding, you really should take your bun to see a vet. Hair loss in places where hair should grow (alopecia) can have many reasons, many of them health-related. It can be a disorder of the immune system, an infection, an infection in the past and several other things.

I do forget what he had in December. But I think it was something wrong with his tummy, that he could past food or something. I do know that his body temp was super low and that they had to put force warm air in his cage at the vets. But I remember force feeding him at lease 3 times a days for at lease 2 – 3 weeks before he started eating. And I think it’s normal shedding, but I’m not sure as I have never saw/ hers this before as he is my first bun.

UPDATE: the spot now has turned black (color of my bunny) I’m wondering if the hair is starting to grow back?

It very well could be. Will he let you touch it and feel if it’s getting fuzzy?

Chom had the same issue. I panicked and assumed mites.

It’s just shedding from the sound of it. Very heavy shedding that scares the bahjeebus out of us bunny owners.

Yea , when I touch it it feels fuzzy. I took a picture of when I first discovered it and now it’s changed a lot in color. When he first got it it was his skin and super soft. Now it’s black (color of his fur) and fuzzy. So I’m assuming it was just super heavy shedding!
