We’ve had bunny for 4 days now, we absolutely love him   He’s a 2 year old male lop, neutered

He did have a vet appointment Monday, they clipped nails, cleaned ears, cleaned scent glands – he looks healthy otherwise.

How often do you really sit down with your rabbit and check him over, to clip nails, check and clean scent glands if needed, etc.?  I found a checklist online, almost like a health check sheet, which is great, but I don’t know how often I should be doing these checks?  Should I get in the habit of doing it weekly, every other week, monthly?

Just wondering what everyone else’s routines are with grooming, and doing health checks.

Grooming varies depending if they are molting or not. When my bunnies are I groom them several times a day. You could sit there for hours pulling tufts of fur off of them and it would never end. Nails should be clipped once a month on average.

Bunnies are very clean animals so you shouldn’t need to clean either their scent glands or ears, they take care of this themselves. More importantly you should know what healthy ears look like and check them every so often when you are playing together to make sure there are no mites or other infections. The scent glands should only need to be cleaned if the bunny is sick or impaired in some way. Either way, you will no by the smell if they need to be cleaned.

          Hope this helps and congratulations!

I never ever groom my rabbit…it really does depend and honestly as a rule, rabbits hate grooming.

My two tend to shed a lot, even when they are not molting. I groom 1x a day during a molt and a quick go over every other day when they are not molting. My lop can’t groom himself well so he requires more work than the average bunny. I do nail trims about 1x a month. I try to check for sore hocks every couple of weeks. Anal glands I check only if I notice a smell or see some gunk.

I suggest checking your buns ears, since he’s a lop, every couple of weeks at least. Lops can get problems like build up and infections.

Seems like you are going to be a very diligent bunny parent.

I was advised by my vet to check my bunnies ears about once a month, but I’m really not sure what I’m looking for?

I have his nails clipped once a month, sometimes I bring him to the groomer to clean his bum. The groomer thought I brush him everyday because his fur is so soft and shiny, I say its all him not me.

When checking the ears you want to check for wax buildup, redness, or a bad smell (signs of infection). Lops have a harder time keeping their ears clean so they sometimes get wax buildup. You can discuss with your vet if this happens.
