My bun, Luna, just recently finished up a round of antibiotics for a runny nose.  The vet was not certain that it was an upper respiratory infection since her lungs seemed clear and there was only snot coming out of one side of the nose, but she did put her on a one week round of a Trimethoprim/Sulfa susp. just in case.  The nose didn’t change at all, it actually got worse, and I’m going to call the vet today, but I don’t know if I should possibly go to a different vet?  Luna was somewhere around 2.33lbs, and is now about 3 and a half months (possibly older, possibly younger)…and she wants to do a spay sometime in the next two weeks?  Does that seem ok?  There are a couple of other vets around, but this vet was recommended on my local HRS vet list page and they have the most reasonable spay/neuter prices…I just want to make sure this is a decent vet, and possibly some questions I should ask them when I call this afternoon?  It is Pet Care in Roseville, CA (a good hour/hour and a half away from me), has anyone on here used them?  I believe I had Dr. Sandra

It’s not unusual for a spay to be done at 4 months. I’ve come across other members here that had theirs under go spay that young. Typically it is done at 6 months or older. If that’s what you feel more comfortable with, no reason to rush.

Has the discharge from her nose been clear or opaque? I wonder if she got a hay seed or something lodged there??
If it is infection, they’ll prob need try a different antibiotic or do a culture/sensitivity test on the discharge.

Do you use wood litters (even pelleted) or bedding?

The vet is really pushing me to spay her this young, even though I am NOT all that comfortable with it (especially because she is only 2.33 pounds…)…She wants to spay her so that she can look up her nose and see if there is anything blocking it, but I’m wondering why she didn’t take a culture while we were there the other day to either confirm or deny the existence of an infection?

So far the discharge seems to be pretty clear, but when it kind of ‘sticks’ to her nose it gets a touch of yellow and brown to it, but that may be that dirt is getting stuck in it…and I did use a pine pelleted bedding. I did think it could have been tied to the bedding and whatnot, so I pulled it out and put care fresh into the letterbox and there was NO change over the week/two week period? I have an appointment with a different vet (the vet that the HRS near me uses and is almost double the price, but 60% of their practice are rabbits…) for Friday, so hopefully we’ll get some answers then. The only thing that bothered me about the other vet was that she wanted to spay her regardless of the runny nose? I don’t know, that just bothered me a bit.

              Hey,

So little personal story. Lilith’s spay was done at 12 weeks! Very young, and before I got her from the exotic vet, but the vet is apparently GREAT with rabbits so I had little fear. I will say, and this is total conjecture, but there are some pros from what I have seen with the early spay (supported by other owners’ responses on my threads)

              1. Very good litter habits growing up.
              2. Seem to skip the crazy, hormonal stage (go straight to the diva stage )
              3. very low chance of cancer.

But seriously, Lilith came home and since then, theres been no territorial issues, no aggression, and no litter woes (mileage may vary of course).

The Law Bun, thanks to your post I’m no longer dead set against an earlier spay (especially because she has not yet displayed any hormonal behavior), and what you have said really eased the fears I had…I did switch vets though, because, while the vet I went to first may be an absolutely fabulous rabbit vet, I wasn’t completely at peace with the decision? So I went with my gut and am now using the vet that the local HRS uses and we have our first appointment Friday It’s wayyyyy more expensive than the other vet, but its a good half hour closer and I would much rather fork over a bit more money than either a) lose her or b) lose sleep over my decision! I also would like at least a culture done of her nose to make sure it’s NOT a respiratory infection before we put her under General Anesthetic and poke inside her nose and spay her…so hopefully this new vet will listen and work with me a little bit!

Another early spay here. Both my girls were done just before 4 months.
