Hi all, i just got my bunny spayed today and i set her down comfortably on her confined area. she was facing a bowl of water and suddenly she did a 180 degree turn and her entire butt sat on the bowl of water. I would assume that she got her incision wound wet as well.

should there be any cause of concern if the wound is wet 3 hours after the surgery?

I tried carrying her to check on her wound and she jumped off immediately and im trying to minimize her movements so im not being forceful when it comes to carrying her but how do i check her wound daily?

my main concern is her wound being wet for now as im afraid it might get infected as wet areas are more prone to infections(at least to us humans).

I wouldn’t think there would be a cause for concern to be honest its likely to dry really quickly, the only thing is she will likely groom it to dry it and may irritate it slightly but she is going to groom anyway so I still wouldn’t be too worried.

Wet areas are more prone to infection in humans, but that means a wound that is actually wet like maybe with a damp dressing (and a source of infection such as bacteria in the wound) or something like that rather than one that has simply been splashed with water. I wouldn’t be concerned unless the wound changes colour or looks ‘angry’.

You should check the wound daily, she may be slightly less active in the days following the op and might tolerate you picking her up more than she usually would. Its just one of those unfortunate things you need to do I am afraid.

Its a bit hard to see in a photo but that looks fine to me. I am certainly not a rabbit expert, but I am almost a qualified nurse (a human one) and I believe that the signs of infection are the same in rabbits, that’s what my vet told me when Bramble was neutered anyway. What to look for is if the wound looks swollen (there will be a small amount of swelling in the first few days but it shouldn’t be too much) any discharge from the wound, if it looks an odd colour (especially yellow) or even if she just seems really bothered by it I would go back to the vet. Of course if the wound opens you should get to a vet asap but from what I can see in the photo it looks fine at the moment.
