My bunny hates hay. He does not like Timothy, Western Timothy or Orchard hay. So, is there any type of hay that picky bunnies enjoy eating ? I heard oat hay may help picky buns.

Mine like oat hay. Every bunny is going to be different, but it doesn’t hurt to keep trying other types of hay. I think oat hay has a bolder taste and is more “crunchy”, so your bunny might like it. Lot’s of bunnies also like the seed heads on the oat hay too.

What “brands” of timothy and orchard hay have you tried? Are they store bought?

I just saw your other post about how to get your bunny to eat hay. You said you’re buying Oxbow and may try some Kaytee. This may be the problem. Sometimes bags of hay in stores sit there for a long time — sometimes in the store, sometimes in the store’s warehouses.

To really see what hay your bunny likes, try to get fresh hay — local farms (must be horse quality hay), online distributors (KMS Hayloft, American Pet Diner, Small Pet Select, etc). Try different cuttings as well — 1st cutting is stalky and crunchy with leaf, 2nd cutting has thinner stalks than 1st but much more leaf, 3rd cutting is all leaf on timothy. Orchard 1st cutting has stalk but mostly leaf, and 2nd cutting orchard is all leaf. Oat hay is mostly crunchy stalk and seedhead (the seed heads are super tasty to bunnies but high calorie). Living in the west coast, you are in the best place to get great hay at the best prices from online distributors.

1st cutting timothy is in harvest right now,2nd cutting should be available starting in a few weeks (dependingbon where you get it), and 3rd cutting will harvest in late September into October.

Liebchen is very picky, here are her favorites:

                Oxbow Organic Meadow Hay

                Binky Bunny Mature Oat Hay

One Ear Up House Blend Timothy

                One Ear Up June/Brome Grass

I can find the Oxbow stuff at my local Petsmart, the others need to be ordered online. At One Ear Up you can actually buy samples of their hay to see if your bun likes it, it’s $3 a sample which includes shipping within the US. You can use the code “HRS” and get 5% off, too. Good luck!

Thank you for everybody’s help. I will try to get Coco some first and second cut hay. But, does One Ear Up carry oat hay? If they do, I will soon be purchasing some of their Timothy, Oat, Orchard and Meadow hay. Also, how big are the samples ? Because if they are pretty big I don’t want that much if my bunny doesn’t like their hay. Right now I try to sneak some treats in between his hay so that while he is looking for the pellets, he will eat the hay. I know this might not be very good since in the future he may not want to eat plain hay anymore so I will stop doing that. The only reason why I had to buy Orchard hay from Oxbow was because at PetSmart they were out of Oat hay. Next time I will just order from One Ear Up.

One Ear Up does not carry oat or meadow hay, but they have a pretty good hay menu and all of their hay is organic. http://www.oneearuphay.com/hay-menu/

The samples are very very small! Only about a large handful of hay.

Ok so since they don’t carry Meadow or oat hay do you think that Coco will like the other types of hay ?

Good news everyone ! Hopefully today I will buy Coco some hay samples from One Ear Up. I am planning to buy each of the hays. I will buy the 3 sample pack and then buy additional samplers. Also, how long does it take for the hay to arrive ? Because I would like to get it before August 8. Thank you

My bun likes 3rd cut timothy hay. Her teeth are fine, and she eats everything up.
