I was not a good bunny mom, and am kicking myself repeatedly.

So those scented candle burners? I use them frequently. I love the smells, and the ease of them being electric. And it makes my apartment smell fabulous. Because of Speckles, I normally keep it on the coffee table, with the cord wrapped so she can’t get to it. Well…. Yesterday she decided that launching herself onto my coffee table was the best idea. She she launched herself directly into the wax burner.

My poor baby was soaked in the wax, mainly her ears and the back of her neck. She squealed, loud enough it almost sounded like a scream. We grabbed her, and immediately went to cool the area and begin to remove the wax. And because we cooled it first, to try and stop her from getting further burned, the wax hardened so we couldn’t get it off her ears. A friend came to grab us and we rushed to the vet.

She has some minor burns along her ears, and some serious skin irritation from the wax. Her poor ears are missing chunks of fur, and are bright red. The vet gave us some cream for her ears and anywhere else we may notice irritated skin, and a second cream for the burns to put on twice a day. She hates the creams, and it is a fight to apply them.

I’m kicking myself repeatedly because I should have been using the wax burner somewhere she can’t reach. She seems okay today other than red skin, and some small blistering along her ears.

What a scare!! Bunnies are terrible! My Bam once burnt his whiskers off on one side on a tea-light. Just like you I didn’t think he could get up onto the coffea-table. Well, he could. No more tea-lights on that table, I assure you.

It sounds like it went well all things considered. Poor little darling, it must’ve hurt =(

She never showed any interest in the coffee table before, and I’m so used to Chom being lazy and liking to stay low to the ground that the thought didn’t even come to my mind. I feel so bad for my baby, especially because I know it was all my fault.

I have to keep a much closer eye on her, and really start to rearrange everything so she can stay out of trouble. She is currently helping while I clean her cage. Her nose came up and nudged my bottom, like she was wondering what I was doing, and she hopped in beside me, and proceeded to help me clean, by batting the hay I was sweeping up into a messy pile. *sighs*

Yep, you gotta watch out for flying bunnies. Glad it wasn’t too serious.

Glad your bunny is okay. Don’t feel too bad, things happen. You obviously didn’t think using candles would ever harm her.

I was kind of a pyro kid in that I really liked lighting candles as a kid. Once, I had a big wide candle burning on the floor while I was sitting nearby and before I could stop her, my cat went over to it and stuck her nose right in the hot wax. I felt so awful. The fur right above her nose never grew back.
