My sweet bunny has become very mean. She started biting , growling ,and like clawing me , could it be because she needs to get spayed ?? she used to let us carry her out of her cage but when i try to grab her she growls and bites. I just want my baby girl back. How much does it cost to get her spayed in america ? helpp !!

Spaying definitely helps with some behaviors and female bunnies can get pretty territorial and downright snitty when there hormones kick in. Its really important to spay female buns because they have a very high risk of uterine cancer (85%!) as young as two years.

Spay costs vary widely depending where in the US you are, but you may be able to qualify for a low cost spay. If there is a rabbit rescue, shelter, SPCA, or House Rabbit Society nearby, you could contact them for advice on local rabbit spay options. You definitely want to find a rabbit savvy vet for your bunny, for the spay as well as other health checks.

I think I paid $180 to $240 for my girls, but that was after being established patients and getting discounts. Our current vet charges @ $450.

Kieko was like a crazed bun! She would growl, box, and bite. She was done as an emergency spay because she went totally nuts the day we brought Marlee and Moshi home as babies. I was actually becoming afraid of tiny Kieko! Marlee didn’t go crazy like that but her “inner thumper” definitely reared its head!

my bunny is just like keiko. She bit me while trying to grab her out of her cage and it drew blood ! how were they post surgery ? did they immediately use the litter box ?

Kieko has always been great with her litterbox, except in our common play area, which is understandable. Both my girls were fine after their hormones calmed down. Kieko even returned to her lap bunny self. She will nip now, but only if we stop petting her before she’s “done” or if she’s playing but its not hard — she’ll sneak up behind one of us and nip us on the back and binky off! No more crazy bunny, just pure diva!

Spaying will only stop the “bad” craziness, not her charming, happy bunny-craziness, that will still be there after she’s healed from the spay. So you don’t have to worry about her losing her true personality, it’s just the hormone-driven behaviors (aggressiveness etc) that will stop.

Costs for spay vary a lot between countries. You could call a few vets and compare prices, but you need to make sure the vet you choose has bunny experience and has performed spays on bunnies before.

                            She’s extremely cute!

I’ve never had to do this because Olly was neutered before he came here, I worked in a rescue centre and bunnies would be brought through a few weeks later, but I would let her settle for a few days, you don’t want to pick her up and she scratches her tummy, just feed her and give her water, she maybe groggy for a few days, the vet would be the best person to ask about when she can play.

if you decide to have her spayed and find a good vet to do it, you could start a new thread and call it sth like “spaying advice wanted” etc. Then people who have had their girl bunnies spayed can see your thread and give you tips and assistance.
