Does anyone know what these are? Every couple of days or so Oscar will shed one, they pop up along his lower jaw and on his cheeks. It’s a bunch of hair stuck together with some gunky looking brown stuff. It doesn’t seem to bother him, I just wonder what this could be?

Has his nose been running? Or has he been drooling?

No, he looks perfectly healthy. This isn’t a new thing, it’s been going on for more than a year probably, we just never thought much of it. His mouth and nose are dry, no discharge, when I pet him in that area I don’t feel anything on his skin. He doesn’t scratch himself excessively, it’s like he doesn’t even notice it.

We have had threads about this in the past and (I think) we agreed that they are just regular tufts of fur with dead skin attached, if I remember right. But “gunky” sounds a little different. Honestly, it looks like earwax to me, LOL.

Wooly will sometimes have tufts of hair fall out with dead skin attached, but it looks more like a giant dandruff flake. I agree LEL, it almost looks like earwax. Weird.

My Bridge Mini-Rex used to get these around his mouth. They drove me nuts and I always plucked them out gently.

Bam gets those but not with gunk. Could it just be sebum from sebaceous glands Around his jaws/cheeks?

Exactly what I was going to say bam. Great minds

Hazel, I posted a pic many moons ago of tufts like these. I can’t say I noticed brown part until I pulled up the old thread just now. It appears Rumball has that too. The white at very end was old dry skin. But there is brown just above that. (See 1st post in link below) So I was thinking sebaceous oils also.

bam, jerseygirl: That must be it! It’s definitely oily/waxy and he only gets them around his mouth. So I guess it’s sort of normal and nothing to worry about? Does this mean he’s overproducing sebum? Should I watch out for cysts?

                        Thanks for the input everyone!
