When I got my bunny, my bf got him from this woman in our town who had “a dog, and kids, and was pregnant, and didn’t have time for him.” We are both members of the same facebook pets page. Over the last year, I’ve seen her post numerous questions about her dog that would be better answered by a vet, asking how she can keep her litter boxes from smelling after three days, because her FOUR cats share TWO litter boxes. She’s gotten a purebred Saint Bernard, which she’s now rehoming, because she can’t potty train her. So today, this woman, who got rid of her baby bunny because she doesn’t have time for it, is looking for a baby female, to keep her OTHER female rabbit company. On top of that, she’s keeping the one she already has, in a tiny hutch, outside. And even though we live in way northern WI, our summers suck. It was 80 outside. She posted a picture, and it’s just a little box. And I offered some information about spaying and bonding, she told me,”Well, thanks. But this isn’t my first time having rabbits.” And I just get so annoyed, seeing her posting ISO ads for animals, when she lives in a small house, with kids and pets she already has, and keeps getting rid of pets. I don’t know if I should say something, or what I can even say. I’m just worried about these rabbits that are going to be outside all summer.

And I’m especially irritated by this one, because someone is offering her a free female rabbit that was used for breeding, and the people were actually going to use her for meat, and her current owners bought her to get her out of that situation, and their kid, who really wanted her, isn’t taking care of her. And I don’t want to see her get adopted by someone, after being in that kind of environment, go to another uncaring owner.

OK if you are concerned call the RSPCA (SPCA) she won’t know you did it, animals especially small ones like rabbits should not be outside in hot weather, they will arrange adoption themselves, they will get nice homes, they will check the new owners out and their homes, if you call them they will not give out your name, I used to work for the RSPCA here in England and even I wasn’t given any information if I asked, but it does sound like a job for the SPCA, she should know about spaying and neutering if it isn’t her first time in keeping rabbits, but I’ll admit that when I finished doing animal care and went into nursing I heard people say they had just got their rabbit neutered or spayed, there were rabbits that had been spayed and neutered where I worked, I just thought there had been something wrong with the rabbit, all I was in animal care someone to clean the cages feed the animals and sit in the large pen and let them run all over me, brush them and they would say a rabbit was neutered or spayed and it would come to me in a few weeks, so I really had no idea on that side of things, apart from they all got worms and I had to give them medicine and check everything, cats need cleaning out every day, cat poop is very harmful to children, I only have one rabbit and he has his tray cleaned every day, sometimes twice a day if needs be, so the best advice I can give you is report her to the SPCA and don’t tell her, if she mentions it on Facebook or anything she is on, just reply with ‘Oh no.’ or ‘Oh heck’ Don’t give yourself away by asking questions about it, if she thinks its you just say you didn’t and you have been too busy all week, or your phones been off all week, or you didn’t have voice calling minutes on your mobile (Cell phone) You could if these pictures are on Facebook print them off all the page so it has her name and take it into the SPCA and show them.
              Good Luck.

That is a terrible situation. If you really feel that theres abuse going on (doesn’t quite sound its to that level) you could always call animal shelter? I am not quite sure how that process works but animal abuse or neglect I think will result in them taking the pets. But that still is not a great situation . Some people just have no respect for the well being of their animals.

Thanks I’ll definitely think about what to do. I didn’t know if anyone else would think this is as big of a deal as I do. It’s 81 degrees today, which is way too hot. The only thing is that I don’t know her address.

It depends on what the laws are in your state. Where I live, it’s perfectly legal to keep animals outside 24/7 as long as they have food, water, and shelter, plus access to shade in the summer. So if I called animal control or the police about a neighbor keeping rabbits outside in a hutch, they probably wouldn’t do anything if said rabbits had those essentials I listed above. Obviously, this would not be considered ideal living conditions and sometimes it’s upsetting even for animal control to see animals outside in the heat. But they simply can’t do anything if the minimum requirements set by the law have been met.

It’s a sad situation. All you can do is try to educate this person. If that doesn’t work, then sometimes it’s just better to not look at this person’s facebook anymore. I know that sounds terrible, but if there’s nothing you can do then you will only be causing yourself distress.

Yea. I don’t think that WI has any laws about animals outside, as long as they have all that. I’ve never seen anything about it, anyways. I’m not even sure who to call about it, so I’m just going to call our animal shelter tomorrow and see what they think.
