Hi everyone. I’ve been a reader of the forums for months and got some great tips from you all. Tonight I registered and this is my first post so apologies if I’ve duplicated what someone else has asked.
I have a rescue dwarf bunny, Levi, who is 2 years old. I got him last November together with a lop called Belle from a loving home who could no longer keep them. He had e cuniculi before I had him but no other health concerns. Since he’s been with me he’s gone into gi stasis in March, may, June and now july. I always pick up on it quickly – last time within an hour of him stopping eating, and get him to the vets straight away despite it usually being out of hours. I just can’t work out why it keeps happening. After the first time I stopped all high sugar treats like carrots and apples, then the vets thought it could be all the cardboard he ate so I took that away, then his vet bed which he liked to shred, so that’s gone. I keep a meticulous record of his eating, drinking and pooping habits (with photos for the vet!!) and he’s been doing brilliantly until tonight when his output is like mouse droppings and although he’s shown the same mad interest when I pour out his pellets he only ate a few. I’ve given him 1/2 a sachet of recovery complex and massaged his tummy – I heard a few gurgles, and given him some left over (but still in date) metacam. Does anyone have experience of this sort of repeat stasis? He had bloods x ray and teeth done last month and they were all fine, I just don’t think it’s fair on him to go through this every month – not to mention my employer having to give me time off, although they are ok about it as they’re all animal lovers I don’t want to take the mick.
I love him so.much and it breaks my heart to see him sick. He’s usually such an affectionate little bunny.
anyway – sorry for rambling but any advice would be so helpful

It could still be his teeth – sometimes it takes a few trims to get the teeth “in check”.

I too would suspect the teeth. Has he had them just examined or actually trimmed? Even very very small spurs may be the cause of things like this, and very often the bunny has to be in full anesthesia for the vet to be able to see the molars properly. (Problems like these are likely to be with the molars and they are difficult to see in a bunny).

I have a bunny who the vets didn’t think had a molar problem at first, but it turned out it was them after all. He had the tiniest spurs. Symptoms were of stasis. After a trim he went back to normal. It recurred six months later so he had a new trim and went back to normal.

Thanks for your replies. The teeth were just checked not trimmed, and he was fully conscious – I have an appointment this evening so I will discuss with them about having a proper look. I can’t think of anything else it could be

Great! Molar trouble is a common problem in rabbits. It of course bothersome, but not at all as bothersome as stasis once a month.

Good news, sort of. The vet could see some spurs and he’s booked in to have them done. Don’t know why the original vet didn’t see them, but I feel very relieved that we may finally have found the cause.

It’s always good to find a cause and a cause that can be remedied. Best of luck with the procedure!

Hope the procedure goes well, and that this helps with the constant stasis. Keep us updated.
