So I got my Dutch Rabbit, Bugsy 4 months ago. He battled multiple stomach aches until I learned to administer simethicone and belly massages. Now he has a white scab on the outside of his ear, when I scrape it with my nail flakes of hair comes out and he keeps shaking himself off, and scratching it with his back leg. I don’t see any fleas or flea poop, so I tracked it down to either be mites or ring worm. (I don’t see anything moving though, maybe i’m not looking hard enough?!)  He digs in a 3 foot plot of tomato plants very often, and also a couple of months ago he would regularly rub up against mold. I can administer Ivermectin if needed. I plan to buy advantage tomorrow and give him a good bath. Really hope someone can help, thanks.

Advantage won’t help if its mites. Don’t bathe him if you can help it, it’s very stressful for a rabbit.

Ivermectin would take care of the mites if it’s mites. Rinworm is a fungus and needs anti fungal treatment, it won’t be beat with either ivermectin or advantage. I’d skip the Advantage altogethere if I were you, it’s no good against either problem, it’s for lice and fleas and may have some effect against ticks.

A bunny often get mites from it’s mother in infancy. You don’t notice them as they are in very low numbers. If the bunny later in life gets sick or stressed out for some reason, a heavy molt may be enough, the mites will get the opportunity to multiply quickly and you get an outbreak.

To me what you describe sounds like mites. Cheyletiella mites are very common in rabbits. Ringworm is common in guineapigs but not in rabbits (although it does happen). Mites are easily cured with selamectin (Revolution) or ivermectin. If you want to be sure about what is causing this, you of course need to take your bunny to a vet. We are not vets here and can’t tell you what medications you should use, you have to make these choice yourself.

Thank you, I ordered Ivermectin, he’s already on Baytril due to his leaking nose is it safe to use both together?

How old is your bunny? It sad he’s been having some gut trouble. Did a vet check out his teeth?

He’s about a year old, when we first got him his teeth were overgrown due to him not eating hay (He hates hay!) very rarely eating pellets. His teeth are normal due to him never stop eating these days, the ivermectin is to treat the mites and the baytril is for his breathing problem and to aid the ivermectin to fight parasites.
