So we have had Basil for close to two months now and aside from some grief with the couch when we first got her before we set her up in a pen, things are going very well. We put her cage in a corner of the living room and attached a dog pen to it so now she has a whole bunch of room to live in. However she has made a few escape attempts by jumping on top of her cage . We are getting her fixed in September and we are hoping that might curb her escpaist bent. We would love to let her out wvery now and then but she always jumps on to our couch which is a little low to ground and pees on it.

Been there done that. I just put a box on top of the cage to keep my little girl from getting up and out and it pretty much worked. I’m not sure that neutering will do a thing to slow the Houdini act. Trial and error is the name of the game with these guys

Yeah we’ve done that too lol, she has a long cage so we stack her carrier, and ramp toy she doesn’t like and and her pellet bag end to end on top to make a barrier, she hopefully wont jump over.

Our bun wasn’t any less interesting in escaping after he was fixed. Nor was he less interesting in jumping up on things. Your best bet is to put something up there to keep him off.

Neutering her will probably not make her less of an escape-artist as others have said, but it may help with the peeing on the couch. Pee-marking is to a great extent a sexually motivated behavior. But until she’s neutered and a few weeks after, you should block her access to the couch, because if an animal forms a habit, it is often very hard to break even if the original cause of the behavior is removed.
