Hey everyone, I’m hoping you all can give me some advice on an imminent situation. My girl bunny, Asia, was recently diagnosed with Thymoma (a form of cancer). The treatments are incredibly expensive, and due to cost of the treatments, other health issues, and other factors, we have decided to keep Asia comfortable (fat and happy) for the next few months.

My main concern (besides her comfort, of course), is helping her mate, Ozzie, cope with the loss when the time comes. Based on your experiences, how long should I wait before attempting to find him a new mate? We still live near the rescue we got him from, and I plan on contacting them prior to the situation so that we don’t have to wait on the application process, but I don’t want to either push Ozzie too early or make him suffer alone (frankly he’s not a big people bun, he really just sees me as a giant treat giver, so I know he’ll be miserable alone).

Thank you for any help you all can give me! These two are my first buns, so this is my first time coping with this whole process.

Honestly it varies from rabbit to rabbit – I would go ahead an put in an app at the rescue to just let them know of the situation so that you can at least get that part done.

I have had some rabbits that just bounce back right away and to be honest that has been my experience with most of my rabbits, but some members have had rabbits who have grieved much longer.

There really is no definitive answer but it sounds like you know Ozzie very well.

Sending comforting vibes to Asia and to Ozzie too.

I agree with Sarita. Go ahead and put an application in. Doing so doesn’t mean you are committing to anything. That would only come if you ultimately decide to adopt a bunny when the time comes. For Ozzie, I would just assess the situation after Asia has passed. There is nothing wrong with taking him to meet some bunnies to see how he reacts. Good luck! And let us know if you need anything regarding Asia. We are a pretty supportive group here.
