I’m thinking of buying a bale of hay from my local feed store and they sell Timothy – Orchard blend hay. Is this a good hay to feed? And if I purchase a full bale for just two bunnies, am I taking a chance that it will go bad before they can eat it all? It will be kept in our garage. Thank you

Both timothy and orchard grass are good hay for rabbits, so that combination would be very nice for them. If the hay is fresh and you store it properly, it shouldn’t go bad. Hay needs ventilation – it shouldn’t be closed up in a container. If you do put it in a container, leave the lid off, or maybe cover it with a piece of hardware cloth fencing if you are worried about critters getting into it. If your garage gets really hot or if there is a lot of humidity, then the hay might not stay fresh as long.

You didn’t say if cars are kept in the garage or not. I always worry about exhaust fumes, and when my husband mows the grass, I don’t let him start up the mower near my rabbits’ veggie garden. But I’m a worrier and maybe the fumes wouldn’t be absorbed into hay or veggies.

Both are great. If they are good hay eaters, the bale won’t last very long haha

The only hay you don’t want to buy is alfalfa exclusively-and it’s just fine to feed as a treat. Any hay is great-they say grass hays but they all are as far as I know except alfalfa which is a legume. It’s great for young bunnies, old bunnies and as a treat.

A mix is great, and mixes entice them to stay interested.

When buying a bale make sure it’s horse quality (i.e. not cow quality -they feed them anything, you want top quality hay)-from a feed store you should be getting good quality.

Thank you. I thought it was okay but figured I should ask I do have a vehicle parked in the garage, and the thought never entered my mind about the fumes….hmmmm! And yes, I’m in AZ so it is very hot here (115°). I could possibly keep it on my patio, but then I worry about bugs, snakes and critters. I buy a tiny bag of Timothy hay for about six dollars and I can buy a whole bale for twenty one dollars

Can you put it in either a metal bin or plastic bin to keep bugs and snakes out? I don’t know if you have badweather there but you could put some bricks or something in the bottom to stop it blowing over in the wind, to stop it turning into a snakes hidey place in the rain if it falls over?

I feed my three month old bunny Alfalfa hay. The vet has a sheet on what to give young and old bunnies and it says Alfalfa for bunnies under a year. I like Oxbow Western Timothy Hay that I get at Petsmart.

I have a hessian bale bag. It seals to keep the hay in but also allows air to pass through. They are not expensive to buy and it’s a great way to transport and store a bale.
