Hello everyone. I haven’t been on here for a long time. I try to let my Holland Lop bunny, Sawyer, out every day, but in the past few months he hasn’t really wanted to come out of his cage for very long. Sometimes he hops around and nibbles on things (paper, cardboard, and other things I have on the floor for him) for awhile and then after around 10 to 15 minutes he goes back in his cage. He is neutered. A friend of mine said she knows people who’s neutered bunnies became lazier afterwards. I don’t regret getting him neutered, but I wonder if that’s true?

He doesn’t seem sick and he’s eating normally. It’s been hot lately, so maybe he just gets a little too warm and doesn’t want to play as much? I keep a fan on in the room and the air conditioner keeps my house a reasonable temperature. It doesn’t matter what time of the day it is. He is most active at night and that is usually when I let him out. He seems to sleep most of the time now whereas before he would spend a lot of time throwing stuff around in his cage and making a lot of noise playing and chewing on toys. He still does this, but nowhere near as much.

I read somewhere that bunnies just don’t want to play very much when they’re older. He is a little older than a year now. Does his behavior seem normal?

He’s not afraid of people at all and will follow me around when he’s out, so he’s not going back into his cage because he is scared or anything. He seems pretty happy and content either way. Thank you for any help!

          It might just be timing.

Porky was like that when I would open his condo he would barely hop around a few time then head back home. Then later around bed time I would be feeding him and he would want out.

So, I installed a porch area to his condo, which he has 24/7 access to. Now he can play when he feels like it and lounge in his condo when he feels like it. He never tries to come out at pellet time anymore. It works great for both of us.

BTW, Porky is not neutered, so lounging lazily in the afternoon is not related to neutering.

Bunnies are most active at early mornings and early evenings. They tend to sleep, relax and laze around looking cute in the middle of the day so it could just be the timing. it also could just be personality, some rabbits are less interested in playing than others. Mine is a baby rabbit and he just doesn’t bother playing very much no matter what I try and I guess that’s just how he is.
