Tenzin is being neutered soon and I was just thinking … what litter should I use in his box after the surgery? he is very very good with his litter box but I worry about even clean litter sticking to the incisions. what is usually done?

When my boys were done, I got an info-sheet from my vet saying that torn up/shredded newspaper was the best bedding for a newly neutered boy. Probably because people mostly use wood shavings here for rabbits, not just in the litter box but in the whole cage and that of course has small particles in it that can stick to wounds etc.

My boys’ incisions were glued on the outside (and had dissolvable stiches inside), and they both healed perfectly.

We didn’t change litter, just used what we’d been using. All three of mine had disolvable internal stitches and glued on the outside. We had no problems at all with litter or the incisions.

I am assuming they will glue the outside and dissolvable stitch the inside. But sometimes there is a little drainage if I remember correctly and that could cause litter to stick to the incision site was my worry.

None of mine had any drainage, or if they did, they cleaned it without me knowing. They all three continued to use their litterboxes normally, and all three had fleece over hay mats that they slept on. Come to think of it, when Kieko was spayed she had an extra litterbox that had Carefresh bedding in it. She had it to use as a digging box, and also would lay it and nothing ever stuck to her incision.

BTW, when it comes to neuter surgery and litter, I would be concerned with making sure that you use a litter that shows pee and poop so you can make sure those are returning to normal and not about whether the litter might stick to the incisions. If the incisions get goopy causing litter to stick, he would need be seen by the vet for possibleb infection.
