i know rabbits aren’t supposed to get wet and i don’t bathe her but dennis has taken to bathing herself in her water bowl

i guess to cool herself off?

do i need to worry about her getting hypothermia or is it fine since she does it to herself?

Don’t worry about them getting wet, I give my rabbits a bath about once a month to make sure they’re extremely clean, and to help them deshed. Now the important part is drying them off, I can easily say it takes at least 45 minutes for me to make him almost 100% dry. You can give them baths, just make sure you keep them in a warm area and not running around the house. Best way is to dry them off with towels and blow dry them. Brush their hair out while you dry as to make sure it doesn’t tangle and it definitely helps drying them a lot faster.

It’s important that she dries properly. If she has long fur, and it doesn’t dry up, it could cause skin-problems due to constantly moist skin. You can dry her with a soft towel or use a blow-drier but don’t hold it too close to the skin or it may burn her.

Healthy rabbits don’t generally get hypothermia if it’s not very cold, heat is a much greater danger to rabbits. Could you perhaps set up a fan outside her cage if it gets very hot? Then she may not feel the need to bathe in the bowl.

Do you think your bunny is trying to cool off?   What is the temperature where he is housed/living?   If it is hot, then you can give him frozen water bottles, 1 foot x 1 foot tiles (can get at home depot) for him to lay on.  Check out our Cooling Tips

ZachH Rabbits are rather fastidious cleaners so I would not recommend giving them a full bath every month.  Some rabbits may have bum issues and can use butt baths regularly but that is just isolating the area and washing it.  Unless a bunny has gotten into something, is disabled, or has a health issue where they can’t clean themselves, I would not recommend it.
