I’m growing Parsley, mint, Carrots, dandelions and Roses, all in my little gardening area, all things that are safe for my Olly, no pesticides,  its all coming along nicely, puts my neighbours gardens to shame, I might have to put my suit on, the BBC might mistake it for Chelsea flower show.

Nice! We have just started a garden as well and I made sure to plant bunny noms as well as stuff for us. Ours is very new though so I assume it will be awhile before I get anything worth feeding out of it. Need to plant dandelions though! And get a grass tray going.

I grow mint and lots of weeds for my bunnies =) The notion of actually deliberately planting dandelions is hilarious here where people fight to get rid of them =)
Here’s a pic of part of my mint-patch, from about a month ago. I have many types of mint, like Morrocan mint, chocolate-, orange and of course peppermint. (some wild strawberry-plants in the pic as well. Bunnies don’t like those, unfortunately.)

I was hanging the clothes out the other day and spotted a dandelion and thought I must grab that when I’m finished. I got distracted when I knocked the peg basket and forgot. The hubby mowed the yard yesterday….. *SIGH*!

One dandelion =) Our lawn is more like 50/50 dandelion/ grass.

LOL bam! The reason for the ‘one’ dandelion is that I no longer look after my grass the way I used too – years ago I would have had a fit! Hahahaha!
Now??? Bring on the weeds! Hehehe…..
I reckon give me another year or two and my yard will proudly look like yours! LOL!

Yes, I can honestly say that having bunnies has changed my whole perspective on weeds like dandelion and ground elder, white clover and daisies. They are now important resources, not a cause of annoyance.

Mowing the lawn is good though, it ensures a long supply of tender dandelion greens.

So much mint Bam! Im jealous we bought a mint plant and it died! I think we planted it too late and it was suffering from root rot or something, sigh. Need to buy more. We got some coriander (cilantro) yesterday I need to plant. Everything else is growing very slowly.

Lee, please come over and kill our mint plants! The previous owner of our home used them as a liner for the garden. They have grown way out of the garden and into it. Its a mess here. I wouldn’t suggest putting it outside of a planter

I’m a vegetarian with a black thumb. I kill plants despite how hard I try. This summer the only thing I got is a potted parsley. Two weeks and it’s still alive. It’s a miracle.

I’ve heard mint always grows like crazy. My mint is doing way better than my other herbs!

Bam planting dandelions sounds crazy to me too!!! We had a bunch next door for about a month and I’d sneak over and take them. We don’t have any anymore though!

Thanks to you Pinky, my mom bought me three rose bushes and is coming to plant them this weekend!!!

Lee you would be surprised. We planted our first garden mid-May and there’s already an abundance of things for us and the buns!

Yes mint apparently does grow like crazy, we purposely planted it in its own pot so it wouldn’t strangle all our other herbs and veggies and it bloody died lol!

Dandelions are a weed in Australia too and if I lived in Brisbane it would be easy to get them, but they dont grow here naturally, so planting them it is haha.

LLH – I think ours as been going for maybe 3 – 4 weeks now….from seeds though, so we have a lot of seedlings at the moment, hopefully they will spring into plants when we are away for a week haha.

Aww Making a garden for your bunnies is a really cute and great idea!

I live in California where it’s around 100 degrees right now and keeping a garden would be hard. The house my boyfriend and I are renting is on a big piece of property with a lot of natural untouched landscaping. It’s like living in the middle of a nature preserve, but everything is dry and there’s no water around. There used to be a creek running through the property and a big pond nearby but it’s all dried up. I keep water out for the birds. They look so happy when they see it.
The lawn in front of my house is still green but there are a lot of dead patches. I don’t water the yard much because of the drought here.

I want to try this someday though if I move to a place with a good gardening spot and when it starts to rain more.

Kirsty – I live in the Australian equivalent of the Californian desert! The Pilbara (have you seen the movie Red Dog?, if so that is the area that I live in). So we have the same issue in summer it easily tops 100+ (40+ Celsius) every day, even now in winter most days we are in the late 20’s.

Lee- I haven’t seen that movie (maybe I’ll check it out sometime! ) , but yes I do know what it’s like to live in a place with extremely hot weather. It’s always been really hot here in the summer and it never bothered me too much, but it’s not supposed to be a desert here. The drought seems to almost be turning this place into one . I live in Northern California and it was usually cold in the winter (not enough for it to snow), but now it feels like late spring/early summer almost all year long and then in the summer it just gets hotter. It rarely rains anymore like it used to. It’s sad because a lot of the wildlife are losing their habitats. The lakes are pretty much gone too.

I want to visit Australia one day. I don’t know where in Australia but I wouldn’t mind going to an Australian desert. I’m already prepared for the temperatures. lol

You could perhaps grow mint indoors in pots? I’ve never tried that though, here mint is the sturdiest plant you can plant, it willingly spreads and slugs won’t touch it.

If your bunny likes basil, that’s excellent for growing inside in pots. Here it does much better inside than outside.

At this point I seriously envy you your hot weather. We’ve had 2 days of summer-weather in total so far. This is not unheard of in Sweden, but it’s still NOT FUN. 12 C (54 F), rain, harsh winds. “pouty emoticon”. They say it’s the coldest summer since 1969.

I planted: kale mix, baby romaine, italian parsley, cilantro, chicory, and chinese celery for Koucha. I moved into a new apartment this past year that doesn’t have a sunroom, so I had to plant outside for the first time! The greens are thiriving well and growing real fast! I will be harvesting some kale pretty soon. I broke off a piece of kale and gave it to Koucha. She immediately chomped down on it!

Mister’s mom is growing some radish and romaine, so she let me cut some of the radish leaves and romaine off for Koucha. She is enjoying homegrown veggies this year

Lots of stuff I planted this year has been devoured by slugs, I’ve never seen as many as this summer. Mild winter, wet and cold spring. They are disgusting.

According to the seed package, kale can with stand 85 degrees, which is the kind of weather that is happening here in Washington, heh heh. I check on the plants when I get home from work.

LoveChaCha I know the answer to this only b/c mine started doing it and I googled it! I guess Cilantro is one of the hardest herbs to grow b/c it only harvests for a short period. Once it starts flowering it’s really no longer cilantro and it doesn’t taste very good. But the flowers will fall off and you will get the spice corriander! I haven’t seen this part of the process take place yet, but my entire cilantro plant is now flowers.

So I just harvested romaine, kale, spring mix, radish leaves, carrot/brussel sprout/broccoli/cauliflower tops for the buns out of my garden! I think I need 6 more bunnies to eat all this!
