        Hi, All!

I’m a new member and first time bunny mom . I have two 12-week old mini rex does, and I think in my heart of hearts, I will end up going with a spay. For those of you with multiple rabbit-children, would you recommend spaying them one at a time with a few weeks/months in between each? Or just go for the gusto and get both done at once? At 12-weeks, they’re nearing sexual maturity, and they’re already pretty headstrong and not really into the whole “loving” thing. The litter training is progressing, but they do still pray and/or pee outside of the cage (like over-spray from inside the cage, they rarely pee during playtime).

        Thanks!!

For females you will want to wait until 6 months to spay.

Personally. I go for just doing everyone at once.

I’ve never had girl bunnies and the procedure with boys are much less invasive, but I would perhaps schedule them a few days – one week apart in case there’s complications. Caring for a newly spayed female is more work than caring for a boy after a neuter.

True it depends if you want all that work at once or to space it out. I am someone who if I have to keep a cage fairly sterile would rather do it for less time instead of knowing I have the same routine coming up again.

If it were me I would spay them both at around the same time if you had the time and money to do it at once.

Oh and talk with your vet about the best age to get them spayed. I think 6 months is the standard but my vet personally feels she does better spaying females around 5 months of age. That is when my female got spayed.

I only have one, but I’ve read that it’s better for bonded buns if you get them both done at once. This way one doesn’t come back from the vet smelling and acting different, creating some distance between the two. It’s more work and money to get them both done at once, but I think better in the long run.

If I could, I would do both at the same time because they will both be feeling ‘off’ together during recovery. Let me tell you, when one rabbit comes home tired and dopey and the other is fine and wants to play-you can see the annoyance on the other’s face! It would be only one trip to the vet and you can do meds once (albeit to two at a time). Also you don’t then have one sexually mature rabbit around their friend who feels badly and smells different!
So if the budget allows-I’d do both at the same time.

I can’t speak for two females at once, but I had my bonded male and female done the same day. Both were around 4 months old. My single female was spayed around the same age. None of mine had any problems with their spays or neuter and all recovered quickly. The hardest part with all of mine was keeping them confined (10 days for the girls and 7 for my boy — they could come out but not jump or run which was impossible for these three) for the vet recommended time. Kieko with her major air binkies and the lops with their crazy fast zoomies would not have been a good thing.
