Calling tomorrow to schedule Tenzin’s neuter. Scheduling it for the 25th hopefully. To get around the heat issue he will be moved into our back room which has AC … We are getting ready to convert it into our bedroom so it cant be permanent but it will be fine for long enough for me to get him a second fan for his own room and let his incision heal.

My anxiety is so bad right now … Ryli ( My dog … who is my whole world) is going to the vet friday for his annual which includes a heartworm test. And then the next week Tenzin is getting neutered. I can’t wait to have this all done.

We all worry as bunny parents. Hopefully it helps you to know that a neuter is much more simple than a spay and boys tend to bounce back rather quickly.

i have had rats neutered, So I am not overly new to the process and recovery. But every animal reacts differently the the anesthesia and thats part of what worries me. I was in a panic attack for HOURS before we picked up my dog. And thats a standard Neuter.

That’s true. Did your vet do any blood work to make sure everything is functioning okay? Some vets do it for all bunnies. Others will skip it if the bunny is young and appears healthy.

No they didn’t. Actually my old vet ( who did the rats) just trusted my judgement about the rats health and just did the neuter so even the exam before the neuter was new for me. I was actually pretty disappointed … All they did was weigh them and give a basic exam to check that they were not under or overweight ( by feel? ) and that the testicles were descended.

I’m sure you can request blood work if you’re concerned. Wooly didn’t have anything done before his neuter though, if that helps.

I don’t think blood work will be necessary and still it wouldn’t guarantee anything. Everyone reacts differently to anesthesia.

I know I keep saying it but its so true even without a bad reaction he could take a while to come out of it and be sluggish etc.

I am assuming I should order some critical care … But what size? going by the directions etc … the 141 gram package should last about 4 days.

Your vet should have CC on hand so you could just get it there. None of mine needed CC after their spays/neuter but definitely good to have some on hand. Some bunnies aren’t really interested in pellets and hay right afterward but will go for greens, but some boys come out of it wanting it all.

I would rather just have it on hand before the neuter. Its good to have anyway. would the 141 gram package be enough?

The 141 g package would be more than sufficient. I’ve never managed to get the full recommended dose into my bunnies. And after a neuter, it’s mainly just given to keep the bunny comfortable and strong so he starts to eat on his own asap.

My first bunny was sluggish after his neuter, didn’t want to eat on his own so I had to syringe-feed him, but he was alright after 24 hrs. With my other bunny you could never have known he’d had surgery. He started eating the second he came home and acted like nothing even happened. So it can be very different.

Well I just realized the 4th of July is coming up and our neighbors are already setting off fireworks … I am not gonna make the same mistake I made last year and have a pet neutered right before the 4th of July. Its too loud and scary. So early July will be the safest.

Its all set, July 10th is his neuter. Which works well since I have weekends off.

The vet has a lot of rabbit experience but the techs dont lol they told me dont feed him after midnight ( what is he a gremlin lol) I told her rabbits cant vomit and I will be bringing food in with him because its vital that he has food at all times. ( at home it would be hay but I am sending pellets and veggies with him)

Yeah, never listen to the receptionist. LOL My vet is very good with rabbits, but the girls up front don’t know much. The techs seem knowledgeable though.

“What is he, a gremlin?” First laugh of my day =)

Pellets and favorite greens are good and some hay if he wants it, whatever he eats post-op is great. Sometimes (at least here) they have to wait their turn a while (they are checked in in the early morning) and then it’s good if he has sth to nibble on pre-op too.

Give him an open water bowl when he comes home in case he’s too tired to deal with a bottle.

Very wise of you to wait until after July 4!

I have tried a bowl with him … He completely ignored it lol. But I will try again.

I plan to put some pellets in his carrier for him to have… Don’t want hay dust in his carrier with a new incision.

I have a 8 ounce bottle that hangs nicely on the carrier so that’s going with him too . A baggie of veggies and a baggie of pellets he should be all set.
