So the fecal exam revealed nothing about the reason olive had completely unformed poops the other night. He’s been peeing less and this morning he didn’t eat his breakfast. So I took him to see the vet. Physically she said he looked good except for gi stasis and his X-ray revealed nothing. They were going to do blood work. However, they couldn’t draw blood because he was too dehydrated. So he got sub q fluids around noon today in addition to Reglan, cisapride and simethicone. It’s now 7.5 hrs later. He still hasn’t eaten. He just peed and it was very dark…almost brown. Could this be from the dehydration?? Also, why would he be dehydrated? What could cause him to stop drinking??

This sound very very similar to George. It turned out to be a bleeding ulcer. It may be a number of things though. George’s main problem was he was anemic, but he was also dehydrated. He only really showed signs of stasis. He just wanted to sleep. It was not until they did the blood work, which show everything that was wrong. Things they thought with George were Hepatic coccidiosis, Lymphoma, or an ulcer. Hepatic coccidiosis will not come up on fecal exam.

I took George back to the emergency vet back since there was no change after his first visit about 7 hours later.

So I would get him back to the vet as soon as possible.

          Get better soon Oliver

Poor George. I was reading your posts…Idont see anything about brown urine. Was that a symptom? I know buns get brown urine when they are dehydrated…but it seems odd that it would still be an issue after sub q fluids

Well George only peed once I am not even sure of the color. His entire gut stopped moving, no gas, no bloat, no anything just stasis.

The big thing for me is you are not seeing any improvement, and that is exactly what the emergency vet told me. If you are not seeing any improvement he should go back in.

I’m glad you were able to find the cause of the problem for George Hopefully he will be able to make a full recovery!
Unfortunately the emergency vet by me only seems to want to keep Olive over night and charge me a ton of money. I’ve never found them to do anything useful. My plan for Olive is patience for now. I will call his vet again in the morning.

Thank you. He’s in his cage for the night…trying to keep things as normal as possible for him. Still no eating. Vibes to George

OliverBunny, it’s quite common for bunnies to become dehydrated due to stasis. If they don’t eat, they often don’t drink either. When a person or bunny is dehydrated, their pee will become darker, in a bunny’s case often whitish and chalky (bunnies eliminate dietary calcium via the kidneys as opposed to most other mammals. )You could syringe-feed him water. You can also do tummy rubs to try and get his intestines moving. I find it helpful with my bunnies when they have stomach issues. Here’s an instructive video, but you must modify it to suit your bunny, not all bunnies are as compliant as the bunny in the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbyC6CWbm5M

Are you feeding him anything, like Critical Care? Bunnies absolutely needs to have a stomach content for their tummies to work with + he needs calories in order to recover.

No critical care since he is eating on his own. I’m very concerned about him. He hasn’t peed over night in 4 days… But hes eating more and pooping more now. He’s still urinating and its back to a light chalky color but he’s doing it far less. He also doesn’t want to do much but sleep. I know bunnies require a lot a of patience but he seems to have plateaued in his recovery. The vet gave me sub q fluids for him but I can’t get him to sit still enough for me to use it. I am syringing him water but the lack of regular output has me very worried
Thoughts? Should I try again with the fluids? Could this indicate a larger issue calling for blood work or is it possible he’s still just recovering?
Also… How do I get him to sit still so I can give him sub q?
