I adopted my bunny about two months ago.  About a month and a half ago i started seeing these flying bugs around Murphy (my rabbit’s) cage.  I thought that it was because I wasn’t cleaning the litter box enough, but since then I have been cleaning her litter box more but there are still bugs!!! And they have multiplied!  Now I am finding them in other rooms besides the room where Murphy stays.  Its sorta embarrassing when i have friends over and they think either that I’m dirty or that I don’t care for my rabbit.  And those are both untrue.  What are they?  Are they common with rabbits or is this something else? They are little black flying bugs. How do I get rid of them?  Im just at a loss for what to do about them.

Tis the season, look to your potted plants. They are usually found breeding in potting mix and are attracted to the moisture from greens and drinking bowls in bunny’s cage. Look around drains that are outside windows where the soil is moist from overflow also check your potato and onion basket as they can start in there too. They are often referred to as Fungus Gnats.

Google the little rotters as there are several sites with info on how to deal with them.

I leave out half drank cold cups of coffee with sweetened coffee creamer (by accident) and they drown themselves in there. You could also try a sugary water mix? Those things are so annoying, but they are pretty seasonal. Washing fruit right away when you bring it in the house can help. And keep the litter boxes very clean.

Fruit flies? Are they tiny little flies with red eyes?

Um, would fly paper or a fly trap work? It would be difficult to use something else if they spend most of their time flying around.

I use window traps, there are a few about but I like the pretty decal ones from Ebay http://suterra.com/product/decorative-window-fly-trap/ this is what they look like. Google “flies, window trap” there are also some links to non toxic home made jar traps.

Make a funnel out of aluminum foil. Put it in a cup with a bit of sugar water. They fly in and can’t get out. Works like a dream.
