Just heard last night that my city’s SPCA took in 36 bunnies from a hoarding situation. They are not used to having more than a few bunnies at a time. The poor buns were kept in a small enclosure in a barn and had to compete for food and breeding rights. Some of them are in terrible shape and full of parasites. Some are pregnant. One died in transport to the shelter. They are going to try to save them all but they fear several won’t survive.

Any hoarding situation like this just breaks my heart but I’m feeling especially sad since this is so close to home. This shelter is like a 5 minute drive from me.

Last night they were in desperate need of hay and shavings but that need has been fulfilled for now. I didn’t get a chance but they will need more soon and I’m going to bring some bales of hay from Winnie’s barn. This weekend I’m going to get them some veggies from the Farmer’s Market.

Not sure what the plan is to adopt them out later. They don’t have the facilities to keep them all so I’m assuming most will have to be sent to other shelters or rescues. I wish I could take another in but my animals are costing me way too much lately, I just can’t.   Later when they are in better shape, I plan to offer my help with grooming and socializing. I doubt they are very people friendly, the poor things.

I sincerely hope there will be criminal charges against the person who did this, but I’m doubtful. People get away with this awfulness way too often.

I’m not going to post pictures because the pictures I saw were truly heart-wrenching. But I just needed to share this and hope you can all offer prayers for these poor little buns.

Oh, I hope your SPCA gets the help it needs and the rabbits get the help they need.

Who ever did this needs more than a slap on the wrist, maybe put them in a small space with people and a little food, maybe put them in with a load of people with Nits and Scabies for a while, see how they like it, unfortunately people get away with anything these days, socializing and grooming will be difficult this ugh person probably never even showed them a brush, I will be lighting my prayer candle tonight and praying for these poor animals and a prayer that this person never goes near ANY animal.

This is always a difficult situation for EVERYONE involved. Those poor animals who were abused need everybody’s focus and attention and care by all the staff/volunteers they have. I also always have mixed feeling about the animal hoarder themselves. Some do it just because they can, and some truly have a mental illness/disability that causes them to act out in this way, incapable of knowing what is best for them and the animals(especially the animals). And I feel like while the people DO deserve to be punished severely for what they have done (And hopefully are NEVER allowed the chance to hoard again), sometimes that will do nothing, and they really just need help and counselling.
This is truly a horrible situation. I hope the hoarder learns what s/he did was wrong and possibly even punished by the law. I hope all the rabbits make it and get healthy again and all get wonderful homes.

I wish I was closer because I would love to drop some supplies off and give them advice ect.

Here are some vibes for the buns!

{{{{HEALTH}}}} {{{{EASY SPAYS AND NEUTERS}}}} {{{{NEW AMAZING HOMES}}}} {{{{VOLUNTEERS TO HELP OUT}}}} and just tons of {{{{VIBES}}}} for all the hardworking people who are taking care of the buns.

Thanks guys. Thankfully our city is very good about stepping up and helping out when this sort of thing happens. There are a lot of animal lovers here, whenever there is a dog or cat that needs a lot of $ for care due to being abused or neglected, people always help so, hopefully, that will be the case with the bunnies as well. I’ve posted the story all over FB in my rabbit groups and on my Profile.

Most of the pics of bunnies I saw were New Zealands. The poor little things.

I saw the story on fb. So sad. The pics were just horrible. Just makes you want to give them all the love and food you possibly can. I sure hope they all find wonderful homes.

Moxie- They are on Facebook. That’s where I saw all the info. You can check them out: Greater Moncton SPCA

JackRabbit- I know. They all need love and I hope with all my heart they all find forever homes. Unfortunately, there is no rabbit rescue in New Brunswick. The closest one is several hours away in Nova Scotia but, hopefully, they will be able to help out. I honestly don’t know where they are housing these buns. I used to volunteer with the rabbits there and there isn’t a whole lot of space. And it’s kitten season too so they are always at full capacity in the cat area.

They estimate it will cost about $150.00 per rabbit for the desexing and parasite treatments. And then there are the ones who have serious injuries or illnesses. The person responsible should have to help pay for the medical bills.

                        Okay LPT.

I looked it up but only saw a couple photos on the side of the page where it shows what’s in their album(? sorry not familiar with FB) before I had to exit it. Those bunnies were in truly horrible shape. I really hope they all recover well.

Poor things. Hopefully the shelter will get what they need. Usually when there is a news story on something like that, people step up to help. Sounds like you have a very giving city. =)

LPT — I totally agree. It can never be made right because no one can take away the suffering those buns have already been through, but that person should definitely have to pay to treat their injuries, illnesses, etc.

Ditto Moxie’s first post including all the vibes – I am tearing up! This doesn’t just break my heart – it’s shattered! Honestly…. how hard is it regardless of your situation and mind set to treat other’s how you would want to be treated yourself??? To me it’s always that simple – obviously not???

And I always have more compassion for the caged/restricted animal than the human – a caged bunny that can’t get away to better it’s own existence. I’m one of those people who have dreams (nightmares!) of owning a caged pet and forgets to feed them – it’s horrible and I wake up feeling distressed.
I have the highest appreciation and compassion of mental health issues – a few people on BB know that from my own personal experience. But when animals are involved and they suffer the consequences I can’t tolerate it. And how does this get ignored for so long for the bun’s to end up in this state? Friends/family, an acquaintance? Someone??? I hate dibby dobber’s BUT when it comes to animal welfare I would NEVER hesitate!

Yes Jack Rabbit, these are our rabbits distant relatives, it hurts when people do this, its late here so I’m off to bed and here is my tonight’s prayer.

Lord before I lay my head to sleep, I ask you watch over these bunnies, give them strength to help them heel from their injuries and illnesses, let them know they are in safe hands now, please help them find real loving homes and give the animal handlers the strength they need to carry on and not give up, Amen.

Oh, poor bunnies! That is so sad I’m happy they’re getting lots of donations though.

LPT, even the Rabbit Rescue in Halifax isn’t that big. I think they can only take 4-5 rabbits at a time. I don’t think there’s another one in NS…

What about Quebec? Is there a SPCA there? I’ve not been yet to Canada to visit family so I don’t know the area, someone told me there is one in Toronto, but that could be too far for them to travel, the problem is so many rabbits, if it was say 2 maybe that would be easy to sort out but having lots of rabbits is more difficult.

The only rescues I know of on this side of the country are the one in NS (10,000 Carrots), one in Quebec (Secour Lapins) and Rabbit Rescue in Ontario. Even the Quebec one is a pretty good distance, like a 6+ hour drive. Ontario is way too far.

Yeah 6 hours is too long even with healthy animals its a big job traveling even with just one rabbit, can they be flown over? I know dogs and cats can go on planes, a small jet not a busy plane and bring them through a back private door of the airport, they won’t know they are up in the air, its just a thought.

I truly believe it’s a mental illness in cases of hoarding and, as MM said, the person needs help. I’ve seen too much sadness around a dog you may have heard of who had her mouth taped shut in our town. I have no desire to see details of this sadness. Sorry. It’s all too sad for words

It’s being called a “hoarding” but I’m not sure if that’s the case of if it’s just a backyard breeder or meat rabbit person who just stopped taking care of them. There hasn’t been any details released yet. I’m really hoping the story makes it into the newspaper, most situations of abuse or seizures do and people really donate after it becomes local news.

Yup. Our abuse case here stirred up a lot of people offering money as a reward. It got up to $6000. They have a guy in custody. THAT one should be thrown to the dogs.

MB— That story about the dog has been all over the internet so I have been keeping up on that. I feel so bad for the dog, her face was litterally swollen and torn into because of the tape, it was horrible. I don’t understand why people do those things to innocent animals.

I agree, MM. Of course, they are having a lot of people interested in her. What I don’t understand is how our local shelter is having an outcry for people to adopt dogs, they’re waving adoption fees for the next however many days, yet when you go in, you only have, like, 20 dogs to choose from…most are pit bulls or hunting dogs. Yet they say they have 200 dogs needing homes. I’m trying (not very hard, albeit) to get hold of them and ask them why they do that. I suspect it’s because they want to place the hardest dogs, and figure people will break down and get them if there’s nothing else. But that just doesn’t make sense. Again, I haven’t spoken with anyone in authority yet but it’s just been making me crazy and I need answers…so I should be trying harder to get them. But I don’t know everything and don’t want to come across like a jerk. But it does NOT make sense that people can’t choose from every adoptable dog they have.

MB— I don’t know, maybe that’s like the only number of dogs they can properly house there due to space or something? But I do believe that some shelters try and adopt out difficult dogs first.

MM When I went for volunteer orientation they said they have 7 more rooms in the facility. Not that they’re necessarily full all the times, but we need to keep in mind that for every dog in the adoption wing there are up to 7 more waiting to move up. It just doesn’t make sense. So many people cannot even have pit bulls due to many reasons. I won’t even go in the run with many of them. Even if they’re nice, they are strong and nuts. We hope to get back into volunteering soon, so maybe one way or the other I’ll get my question answered.

Although I think most Pit Bulls are good dogs (unless the have been abused then it is understandable if they show aggression, or if they were not trained/socialized properly), a lot of people cannot adopt them due to living situations ( a lot of home owners don’t allow Bully breeds), money or time, and a lot of people are just scared of them frankly. (Although some of the best dogs I know are pit bulls, and my favorite dog ever that isn’t mind is a rottweiler/black lab mix who is HUGE but he thinks he’s a little teacup Chihuahua and is so friendly). There are definitely more pit bulls in shelters than other breeds, so there definitely is a “Push” to get them out. It just makes me sad how many animals are homeless.
I read online that for every baby that is born, 15 puppies and 45 kittens are born. :^(
