Someone told me a bunny likes to eat roses, if so, how many? Do they have to be red?

They do eat roses, but it doesn’t have to be the flowers, they like the green parts as well. Mine prefer the green parts. Any color roses is edible and according to my bunnies, very yummy. Commercially grown roses are often heavily treated with pesticides, though, so beware of those.

They can eat as much as they normally have of any greens. It’s not sugary like fruit so there are no restrictions. Other edible flowers are wild violets and apple-blossom and daisies and chamomille f ex.

LOL Pinky – how cool are you? Your adorable!

Just letting you know my hubby doesn’t buy me roses anymore (I knew I shouldn’t have married him cause he bought me heaps BEFORE I said ‘I do’! DOH!). But, my youngest son does for Mother’s Day and my Birthday – isn’t Henry (my bunny) a lucky boy! He’s not fussed on colour but I prefer RED!

            LOL!

Hmm might grow some for him, hope he doesn’t get the wrong idea, he does give me bunny kisses all over without roses, yesterday he was pushing me with his paw so I wondered what he wanted and laid flat and he gave my ear a bunny kiss, AndHenry, no flowers oh dear.
Well if I grow some and forget to give him some he might play Barbra Streisand & Neil Diamond You don’t bring me flowers anymore and stamp about.

LOL! Don’t tell anyone on BB but I love Neil Diamond!!! And I don’t mind a ‘bit’ of Barbara too, especially that song, hahaha!

The likelihood that he starts to sing that song is extremely high, so you’d better not forget to give him his roses. Or you could sing I Never Promised You A Rose Garden to him, in response. Singing-duels with you bunny creates good, strong bonds.

                  (Only joking!)

Gosh bam, your gonna get me into trouble with the ‘cool’ BBer’s – I LOVE that song ‘I never promised you a rose garden’ by Lynn Andersen hehehe! I grew up with that on the radio (and I mean AM radio – NOT stereo, lol!) when I was a kid in primary school. Lol!

Maybe we need to turn this into the ‘tragic music’ DOB in thread???? LOL!

Sorry Pinky, but we are known to de-rail threads on BB – OOOOP’S! Hahahaha…….

PS – We got into trouble once by a forum leader for overtaking a thread (I don’t know HOW we do it???) cause we barely helped the BB member out with their question, GASP! Naughty us! But I remember it was VERY funny! And I should add, the member was fine with it. Naughty BBer’s!

Oh bam he loves it when I do Karaoke online in my chat room, he likes it when I sing “Ben.” by Micheal Jackson, he sits down next to my feet and looks up, or he will jump up on my coffee table and rub my hand with his face or put his paws on my tummy and let me stroke him.

Haha, but seriously, bunnies can eat roses?!?!?! You’ve got to be kidding! We were going to plan rose bushes when my mom was here….maybe I can talk her into coming back!

LLH – Yep, they are perfectly fine. You could eat them too, if you wanted. They probably only taste good to bunnies though. LOL You can make tea from rose hips, they are rich in vitamin C.

                              From Wikipedia:

                              Food and drink
                              Main article: Rose hip

Rose hips are occasionally made into jam, jelly, marmalade, and soup or are brewed for tea, primarily for their high vitamin C content. They are also pressed and filtered to make rose hip syrup. Rose hips are also used to produce Rose hip seed oil, which is used in skin products and some makeup products.[citation needed]
                              Rosa canina hips

Rose water has a very distinctive flavour and is used heavily in Persian and Middle Eastern cuisine—especially in sweets such as nougat, gumdrops, raahat and baklava.

Rose petals or flower buds are sometimes used to flavour ordinary tea, or combined with other herbs to make herbal teas.

In France there is much use of rose syrup, most commonly made from an extract of rose petals. In the United States, this French rose syrup is used to make rose scones and marshmallows.[citation needed] In the Indian subcontinent Rooh Afza, a concentrated squash made with roses, is popular, as well as rose-flavored ice cream and kulfi.[8][9]

Rose flowers are used as food, also usually as flavouring or to add their scent to food.[10] Other minor uses include candied rose petals.[11]

Rose creams (rose flavoured fondant covered in chocolate, often topped with a crystallised rose petal) are a traditional English confectionery widely available from numerous producers in the UK.

Rose creams yes, I’ve had those, I have got some rose drops to add to cakes, tried it once but ewww, and I know the cooking drops is not for bunny, Kulfi Indian Ice cream and Rooh Afza is nice, Rooh Afza is very expensive, but nice made with ice cold milk, I used to drink it a lot because I woked in a shop owned by an Indian family, but when I made it last time I put too much in and it sent my sugar levels sky high, so its not good for diabetics, Fry’s Turkish delight, is a rose covered gooey sweet covered in chocolate, in England, very tastey but more than one is not good, you can be a bit, “Ugh where am I?” I might get one when I go to the corner shop They are tastey, Ooh Turkish delight, going to count my money now, lol

Well this is good news, my father has over 20 rose bushes in his yard that produce over 30 flowers per bush per couple weeks, yay for free foods for the buns!

We moved into a house with roses. I leave them on the stems for a short while, then I break them off and keep them in the fridge as a salad topper because I wasnt sure how much Gus could have. Drives my husband nuts. HOWEVER as someone mentioned about the pesticides, I’ve read that you shouldn’t feed your rabbit, like, pansies from the garden center (oops) because of the chemical fertilizers. So I got a fertilizer that is Good for fruit and veggies for some of the things I’m growing. Haven’t done anything for the roses yet. I only feed Gus the roses that have been planted for many months, so I’m assuming the fertilizer is pretty much out. But the roses I just bought I don’t use for food. I don’t know if any of this makes sense, so feel free to comment friends!

Megabunny, I agree, many if not all plants you get from any garden center could/would be treated with systemic pesticides. After a year they should be ok though. Fertilizers are ok. I use chicken manure (heat-treated) or horse manure or organic rose fertilizer.

I have lots of roses and I’ve made rose jelly plenty of times. It gets the loveliest rose color. My buns prefer the leaves over the flowers. You can dry the petals very easily and use as toppers. I use them for potpourri.

I’ve tried giving the buns rose hips, but no luck. You know the “Are you an idiot???” look bunnies give you when you feed them sth they don’t approve of. For I while a had rose hip pills I got from someone, they are used for joint problems etc as a natural remedy, and Yohio loved those.

Well, Bam, I gave Gus rose leaves and he gobbled them right up. He gobbles anything up, so I doubt it’s worth the effort to dry the flowers. Few of them have any good smells, so I’ll keep them as bunny food. And they tend to flower practically to Christmas, so we should have a good supply of leaves anyway. I’ll have to get some good fertilizer though.

Megabunny, I only dry leaves (and rose petals) because the season is short here. I also have many old style roses that only flower once per season.
A bunny eating flowers (or petals) is a lovely sight, it’s like a real-life beautiful postcard =)

Actually, some are left, but I think at least one of the bushes will not be able to recover 🙁

Deer eat all plants that people like =( My mother had to fence her garden in with an extra high fence on all sides because she kept finding deer munching away in her flower beds. It’s not like they were starving or anything. They just like roses and just about every other pretty garden plant. Her house is not even in a rural area, the deer trot around in the streets looking for yummy things to eat =) They are beautiful to look at though.

I saw lots of wild deer when I lived in Scotland, I was surprised that a mother brought her baby to see me when I was sat outside on the wall, it was 2:00am, I was upset at the time and I think they came to see what was wrong.

We had deer by the herds in New York, so we don’t mind too much, but my roses? I didn’t think they’d come so close to the house…silly me. THere’s a neighbor who is enjoying having begonias and such out this year, because HIS neighbor has an automatic deer feeder. It somehow shoots out corn at some predetermined interval and the deer stand and wait. So they’re leaving the neighbor’s stuff alone this year. That would be illegal in New York. Sounds fun if we had a little patch of trees to do it in. I’m not going to do it in my yard or I know what piles I’ll have waiting!
