So in the very beginning when we got Caleb we got these little cat balls that jingle for Caleb to play with, we never thought much about it and also because he didn’t even want to play with them so we put them away. Fast forward to when we got Gamgee, he seemed to like the jingling and would play with them a little bit so we kept one in the cage. Never had a problem for a year, well apparently Gamgee ran out of hay to eat *which is most of the time impossible because we put A LOT of hay in there for night time because we know Gamgee loves to chew on it especially when he gets nervous or just because* and so he decided to play with the cat ball, well I didn’t know that the cat ball thing was filled with styrofoam…I mean really why would they use styrofoam?!?!?!

I wake up to this weird mouse scuttling noise and I’m like “oh no” and I go over to the bunny cage and I see Gamgee eating it….why are you eating it? I know it’s food time but come on you don’t have to eat every second. About .23inches of the ball is gone and there’s no evidence of it around the cage so I know he ate it. The ball itself isn’t that big, it’s an 1.5inches, I’m really worried but it’s also not that much. Like I said Gamgee eats A LOT of hay and is always pooping do you think he’ll be ok? It’s memorial day of course and no vet, do you think he’ll pass it. Or should I worry about the chemicals effecting him more. Right now he seems ok, ate breakfast and is laying down like normal, he must of been working on it for awhile but didn’t actually eat much.

I’m really mad at myself for not checking what was inside before I gave it to them to play with

Rabbits may sometimes eat non-food items. It doesn’t seem like Gamgee ingested a whole lot of the styrofoam. Anyway, all you can do now is to watch him, keep him hydrated (freshly rised greens may help), provide him with hay and check for normal poop. If you empty his litter-box and put all new litter in it it’s easier to see how much poop he generates. If he stops eating, pooping or the poop becomes sparse and very small like black pepper corns, he may have a blockage and you should see a vet. You can also help him by massaging his tummy.

I hope he’ll be fine, many bunnies my Yohio included eat stuff they shouldn’t and survive to do it again =/

thanks bam I love the massaging is a great idea but Gamgee is not a patient or loving bunny….when I put my hand in to pet him he’ll let me pet him for like a second and then hop off

I’m really hoping that he’ll just pass it, I was just super worried when I woke up but he was acting normal. Right now he’s stuffed his whole face into the new pile of hay I’ve put in there and eating to his heart’s content. I’m really thinking he’s got a stress disorder that causes him to eat excessively because there are only a few times where he’s NOT eating something.

Gamgee has been acting and eating normally, I think I got lucky this time but lesson learned. He has pooping and peeing normally and ate his salad last night no hesitation.

If it makes you feel better, Tilly ate 2/3 of a rubber bouncy ball before we discovered it and she wasn’t effected in the least! Pete has also been known to eat things that make for “interesting” poops, but don’t upset his system. As long as he’s still peeing and pooping he’ll probably be fine. Bunnies are bouncy little goats with soft paws.

Bunnies love chewy things like that. The age-old advice is to watch poops and appetite closely for a couple of days and offer lots of hay and wet greens.

I kinda feel like Gamgee was a goat in his past life >.> he will try to eat anything, He already eats LOTS of hay I mean way more than Caleb, so I think I’m covered there he’s acting like his normal terrible self so I think he’s ok. He is also pooping a lot like normal.

I’m so glad he’s fine! They are terrible =) Yohio has eaten f ex half a plastic cat toy and parts of a leather bag and part of a hot water bottle and none of it seems to have bothered him. (Bothered me though, the leather bag was a really good over-night bag.)
