it’s our first summer with a bunny and it’s supposed to be super warm tomorrow (24C) so I’m just looking for any extra tips on how to keep our baby cool tomorrow (and other days!). her kennel is down the hall from my room in the basement, which is a plus in a way.
it’s supposed to hit 20 by noon so I’ve opened the windows to let the cool air in, set up the fans and thrown some water bottles in the freezer. when I get up I’ll be closing the windows and blackout curtains and applying the rest of my preventive measures :p any other tips and tricks are greatly appreciated and I imagine there’s other new parents on here too hoping the pros will come out and pool their knowledge

mods: if there’s already a thread on this, please merge/redirect as necessary. my bad!

Frozen water bottles for her to lay against are good. What type of kennel is she in and what is the flooring like? If she’s in an xpen type area with plenty of space, you can put a piece of ceramic floor tile in her area for her to lay on. Fans are good, but you don’t want it blowing on hervin a way that she can’t get away from it. If its really hot, I’ve heard of people hanging a damp bedsheet over partvof an xpen and having a fan blow toward the sheet to cool the air.

There may not be enough room for a tile in there since you want her to be able to choose not to lay on it if she isn’t hot. Make sure she can dig the blanket back and lay on the plastic floor if she wants. Any way you can attach an xpen to her cage to give her more room? If you can, that would not only give her room to hop around, you’d be able to use some of the other cooling techniques.

a bit of an update, she did pull the blanket back in front of the entrance to the built in bunker portion of her kennel. the opening the windows at night and closing them before the heat started worked amazing. I also had a rotation of ice bottles inside and out of the kennel, and a small fan. if I may dare say, she was none the wiser that it was scorching out noticeably cooler. good for her (and mom and dad!)

LOL Aaron, I shouldn’t laugh but 24c down here is perfection. My buns love those days when I leave the house open and let the breezes blow through. I have AC in the lounge just for them which I don’t turn on till it passes 30c. The house is well insulated so if I keep the doors, windows and curtains closed the house stays around 25c. 80f or 27c is the redline for buns, once it goes over you have to worry. In Summer and sometimes Spring and Autumn it can hit 40-48c. For me that means the house is fully sealed, AC goes on and every bunny has icepacks.

LOL Roberta, you beat me to it – I was going to ask AaronJ if he made a mistake with his temps??? 24C is a beautiful day – no need for any cooling. We are the same here as Roberta even though I am on the other side of Australia – we have AC that only gets switched on when it hits 29/30C.
Gosh, it was 23 degrees here today and I almost put a jumper on, hahaha……

But good for you Aaron for caring – a lot don’t! SAD face!

Ditto that. But obviously bunnies that live in a cooler climate are used to a cooler climate and may feel hot when the temp rises.

I’m very paranoid about my buns overheating. It gets super hot and muggy here in New Brunswick. I keep a thermometer in the rabbit room to monitor when I need to switch into Super Mega Bunny Cooling mode.

Some other cooling tips are to put a very well wrung out cold wet hand towel over a fan. And to do an ear turban with a cool well wrung out cloth. Baby facecloths work well. I only do this when it’s really hot, since my buns hate it.

I think that applies to me too! haha. we’re from the Cape so it gets pretty chilly here a good portion of the year. supposed to go up to 31 with the humidity tomorrow, making sure to put some treats for me in the fridge for myself to beat the heat. forgot to mention, we’ve picked up a large size cooler “mat” I guess you can call it.

I envy anyone living in a comfortable climate.

Living in the Maritimes is just a joke, really. It’s freezing, wind chills and storms all winter and disgusting sticky hot all summer. I just saw the temp for today: 30C with a feels like of 35C. That is unusual for so early in the season. Not even officially summer. grumble grumble. I don’t even have my bunny fans out of storage yet.

I HATE the heat. Unless I’m in a pool or at the beach, I hate it. So I think I tend to pamper my animals in the heat because I don’t want them to be uncomfortable.

I think 24c is a good temperature already where I am the temperature goes from 30c to 40c normal days and that’s seriously very hot. What I do with my bunny is frozen water bottles wrapped in a cloth then I hide it inside her house. Next is that I use those doggie gel mats. I cover them with a pillow case so she won’t have accident on it and better safe than sorry. Presto an instant cooling area for my bunny, she takes naps on either one so it’s fine. She like to do the bunny flop there and would fall asleep.
