A while ago I was posting about how frustrated I was about finding an apartment that allowed me to bring Meketaten up across the state to live with me again. Well, I did find a place, an apartment building, that would allow me to bring her or other caged pets.

I was planning on bringing Meki up at the end of summer, to kind of gauge how hot it gets in the unit during the summer, noise levels, quality of apartment, etc. But recently I’ve taken notice that my upstairs neighbors are pretty loud and allow their young son to play acrobatics on and around their balcony and in front of the building close to the road.

And that’s when it’s got me thinking, people in an apartment building can be careless. My boyfriend and I are completely surrounded by units and sometimes accidents happen. Add on that a friend of mine posted on facebook that an apartment complex behind her house caught on fire a few weeks ago…

Essentially, I don’t think I can bring Meki up anymore. I’m actually terrifying myself silly with the thought of my long hours at work and school keeping me away from the building if a fire ever broke out. We were talking about getting a cockatiel and for some reason I still don’t have a problem with that since I reason that the bird makes noise and neighbors or emergency personnel would hear a bird panicking in the living room by the door, but they wouldn’t be able to hear a bunny in the back bedroom.

I don’t know, I think this is mostly just a nonsensical train of thought of being in a place I’ve only lived in for a week, but I’ve never lived in the same building as SO many other people before and like I said, people can be careless, and one person’s mistake can mean the death of my baby. Old building, (newer) gas ovens/ranges, gas heat.. I worry.

Does anyone else have this fear? Is there a way to rationalize it? Or am I just better off keeping Meketaten at my parents’ for one more year and a half before we can move into a duplex back on my side of the state again? I think about how happy I’d be being able to come home to her and have her snuggle with me on the couch again, but then I think about being away from home if something disastrous happens.

That’s a tough one. I’m sure alot of people would say that you can’t live your life worrying about things that rarely happen, but when it comes to fires I’m with you on the apartment building fire fear. If something were to happen, the focus is going to be on getting all the people out and, if there’s time, then saving the pets that are known and easy to get to. If you bring Meki, get a pet alert sticker and put it on the window of the room she is in. If you’ll be gone alot and she gets plenty of attention and exercise throughout the day at your parents’ house, then that’s an option.

I have my own house and still am afraid of fire, especially with me being away all day at work. My mother lives with us and her rooms are on the 1st floor. She would be doing good to get herself out of the house and cannot make it upstairs where the bunnies are. I even bought a 24/7 security system just for the fire monitoring because of the buns, and recently got pet alert window stickers. I keep their carriers pre-loaded with Oxbow hay stacks and puppy pee pads in their rooms at their condo/xpens in case of an emergency (I figured pellets can wait if needed and I can getva bowl for water anywhere quickly).

We have wood stoves for heating in the winter, and even when we are gone for only a couple hours I still worry. At least with an apartment you could tell your neighbors you have a pet and if there was ever an emergency would they mind alerting the firemen or trying to help? Or put up pet alert stickers on the window of your pet rooms or on the outside of your apartment door (or both!). But Fires are a scary situation. And in the end it’s your choice on what you are going to do. Also having carriers or whatnot ready in case of an emergency is a great idea too.
One of the scariest things that has happened to me is that at our old house our neighbor’s wood mill (literally right across the road, 30 feet away) caught on fire and 3:30 AM. Their whole woodmill burned down, a trailor and another building along with several acres of trees. The firemen were just able to stop the fire from burning their house too. We were in serious danger and the only thing that stopped the fire from going that 30 feet over the road to our house was the light rain we had had the night before. (the flames were like 150 feet in the air!) But that night we had not been ready and it was VERY difficult to try and get 3 dogs and 3 cats to safety when not prepared

. So really the whole point of that story was to have a kennel ready or a travel cage for a bird ready in case of an emergency. I’m sorry I was probably no help whatsoever. Sending you some comfort and thinking (((vibes)))!

Thank you! I’ll definitely look into the pet alert stickers- I remember having a child one on my bedroom door when I was little and can’t believe I didn’t think of that! I already keep her travel cage stocked and open right next to her cage in case of emergency. We get a lot of tornado warnings where my parents live so they’re used to tossing her in there when they have to get to the basement fast, haha.

Fires and tornados are some of my biggest fears and always have been. Huge disasters that there’s nothing I can do to stop or prevent. I can probably blame the fear of tornados on watching the movie Twister when I was young, but fires stem from when my grandfather was testing the heat in a camper we always stayed in that he was trying to sell and doing some general cleaning. He turned on the heat and walked into the kitchen portion when he noticed smoke coming from one of the bedrooms. He found fire, got out, and the whole camper was quickly consumed. Just how fast it happened really opened my eyes as a kid to how destructive a fire is and how fast it can spread. Living in a duplex/ townhome/ house I had the thought in my mind, but now that I’m in a building where 16 different families share one roof my trust in others is right out the window and I’m a huge worry wort!

Gosh MeketatenBun, I probably should not be replying to your thread, I am very selfish when it comes to my pets – especially my Henry. I had a scare just recently and if the truth be known it’s because ‘I’ want him to be free roam and as his mum that is my choice not his. I had the fright of my life and do you think I have caged him since? NOPE!
As you do know…. I hate that Henry jumps on me and wakes me in the morning BUT I ‘love’ it! I love that he hangs out and sleeps with ‘his’ dog’s and he is free to zoom and go from one room to the other and just be free to do whatever he wants when he wants. And to make it worse, I can’t declare that he exists in our home – told you I was selfish! Short of having his carrier set up as his toilet I am NOT prepared except to grab a pillow case and shove him in. I know I could make his world safer, but at the expense of us enjoying him and him enjoying us.

I have never lived in an apartment complex and after reading your post I totally get your fear! But as I indicated above – I am very selfish when it comes to my pets – I want to enjoy them, especially Henry!

I understand about your fear…I know though that no matter what even in homes (not apartments) there could be the possibility for fires even electrical.

I also know that if I’m not home for any disaster like flooding or tornado there isn’t anything I can do to save my rabbit. Obviously I cannot stop the weather but I have a chance of saving my rabbit only if I’m home.

Thinking about not be able to save my rabbit does make me sad so I understand where you are coming from even if it’s not rationale.
