I have a just-turned-one year old neutered male Flemish Giant, Boris. We let him out of his condo every day for exercise/fun/socialization and he has access to basically 2 big rooms — living room and dining/kitchen. We also have 2 female goldendoodles.

The dining room isn’t used often and has become his hangout den. Potty-wise, he behaves perfectly over there. No accidents. No poop, no pee.

However, in the living room, we have a shaggy rug. We also have a second litter box right in front of the couch, which was his favorite pee spot. So we put the litter box there with hay in it. He’s pretty good about going in there and eating the hay. Whenever he goes in the litter box, I will give him a treat and tell him he’s good (especially when he pees in there).

But! He turds it up on the carpet! Constantly. Piles, one-offs, everything. Which isn’t a huge deal, since it’s easy to pick up. Also, the dogs spend a lot of time on the carpet too… so I’m thinking he might be trying to make it his? Even though he’s neutered? Still, would love it if he DIDN’T do that — any thoughts?

My main question is peeing. He will be SO GOOD for a month or so… so that we think he has grown out of it or is trustworthy, and then he will pee on the carpet. Usually right near his litter box, so there’s no excuse of why he couldn’t have gone in there. This is extremely frustrating! Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!

First of all the rug – I think your guess is what I would say. Its shaggy so probably smells like dog; and the poop is territorial.

As for the peeing – you say right near his litterbox; is it possible he’s aiming for the litterbox and missing? I’ve known my buns to do this sometimes.

No, it is a high sided litter box and he knows how to get in there. Actually, tonight I caught him having peed in 3 different spots away from the couch and litter box….so perhaps he pees all over it and we don’t notice? True solution being…. No rugs and just let him slide all over the wood floor? :-/
