So, this has nothing to do with my rabbit but since I couldn’t find anything online to help me figure this out I thought I might as well give it a shot and see if maybe anyone on here might have some insight.

My hamster’s fur seems to be changing colour. He has always been a grey/brown colour, but over the last little while patches of his fur, starting on his face and slowly spreading backwards, have been turning a dark grey colour. At first I thought something in his cage might be rubbing off on him but I checked everything and it’s not that and I’ve tried to wipe it off in a small area and it doesn’t come off. He is otherwise healthy and normal (he might sleep a little bit more but it’s hard to tell) and doesn’t seem sick or anything. It’s just weird and I don’t know if it’s normal or something bad. He’s just over a year old.

Honestly Ive never had a hammy change colour on me. Can you call an exotic vet clinic and ask them if this is something to be concerned about? As long as he’s not losing fur and is eating well he’s problably ok…

I remember my last hamster’s fur changing as she aged. It might have something to do with the genetics of her coloring. She was what they called a golden hamster.

Our hammie Elvis has changed color just in the short time we have had him ( got him in January). He was a darker gray but now his fur is becoming a light brown.

I know some of our buns fur coloring have changed with age.

What species of hamster is it?

Winter Whites change color in winter I believe, so maybe it’s something along those lines? Although it’s basically impossible that you have a pure Winter White unless you bought from an actually WW breeder…but Campbells/Winter White hybrids can change color as well. I’ve never experience this first hand, since my boys are hybrids but more Campbells than Winter White.

do you have a ” siberian dwarf”? Also known as a winter white. They change to white in ” winter” but its in fact caused by day and light cycles.

I wouldn’t say its impossible to get a pure WW unless you got it from a breeder. I had a sapphire WW that was a craigslist rescue that they bought from a pet store.

Never had that with any of my hamsters, but all my grey cats have gotten darker as they aged.

He’s a syrian. He never changed colours before, and it’s not everywhere it’s patchy. And he does seem perfectly healthy otherwise I just don’t understand why it has started doing it all of the sudden.

I think that hamsters can get grey fur as they age, my Syrian Stevie also has had lightening of her nose fur. She is around one year old as well, middle age.

I looked it up, so what they call a “golden” hamster is a wild type Syrian hamster. My hamster looked just like this one:

As she aged, darkened gray patches started to develop on her rear, legs, and head. So I think it depends on what color they are to begin with, but they can change color as they age.

He’s not lightening though, which makes sense with age, the patches are darker. He was always a light grey/brown but now he has these darker grey blotches and they’re spreading/getting bigger.

(He’s not losing hair and it’s not thinning, the lighting in the room makes it look all weird)

It looks pretty symmetrical though, which makes me think what you’re seeing is due to age. The gray patches on my hamster became darker, not lighter, as she got older.

I have never seen anything like it on a hamster. It looks like something is in his fur more than its actually changing color.

Yeah, I’m thinking it must be due to aging. I originally thought he got something on him but there is nothing he comes in contact with that it could be, I checked, and it doesn’t come off.

My dogs neck is dyed grey from his tags … it doesn’t come off either its staining

I have never seen a patch of fur like that. Though I did have one hamster who was born as a dove and ended up orange in old age. Quite odd.

I would guess aging. How old is he? He’s cute though, I love hamsters.
