Ragnar was to be spayed today. The surgery went well, but she died in recovery. I can’t believe she’s gone. The vet tried to figure out the cause, he says it looks like her liver was enlarged, but has no definite answer. He thinks he may have been damage from living outside for a year. But it doesn’t matter now I guess. Ragnar was a sweet, outgoing rabbit who amazed me with her adaptability. She loved it when I sat or lay on the floor with her, she’d use me as a jungle gym and sniff my face. And when she wanted to take a nap, she’d lay down, leaning against my arm or leg. Sometimes she’d touch her nose to my nose and it was so sweet. She seemed happy to see me, and I never saw a rabbit who binkied as much as her. I’ll miss you, Ragnar.

I’m so sorry to hear this. She was a beautiful girl. Her time with you was short, but you saved her from living a life of hunger and constant danger. In the time she was with you, you showed her how a bunny deserves to be loved.

              Binky free Ragnar …..

I am so sorry. Unexpected loss is the worst. Take comfort in that you were doing what was best for her, she was gorgeous.

I trust the vet, he’s taken good care of our Mordecai and our birds in the past. He was the one who did Mordecai’s crypt-orchid neuter. So I believe he did everything he could and this wasn’t his fault. He’s obviously upset and feeling guilty, he told us we could call him anytime if we wanted to talk. He said he’s not entirely sure what went wrong, but has a guess. His best guess is that she ingested a parasite, he said the name but I can’t remember what it was called. It’s a parasite she would have ingested while living in the wild and hid in her liver. One small comfort is if it is this parasite, it’s picked up through ingesting, not shed from animal to animal, so Mordecai should be safe. It hides in the liver and isn’t shed through feces and isn’t found in bloodwork unless it leaves the liver. Despite a lack of symptoms, it could easily cause complications during the surgery. This is only his best theory, but he’s not positive. It makes sense I guess. Or it could be any other underlying condition from living outside for so long. Ragnar deserved better than this and it breaks my heart that I can’t give it to her.

But you did give her so much. I can understand the mixed emotions with this though.

Little comfort, but at least she passed while feeling dozy and under pain management. Not so long ago, her life could have been lost out in the wild in an unpleasant manner.

She looked like a real sweetie ***Binky Free Ragnar***
