Lola is a year old Holland Lop, and she just got spayed two days ago. We picked her up the day of her surgery. The vet said she did well and gave me 5 days worth of metacam and Lola in a carrier…with a cone on. I felt so bad for her – the cone was huge! When we got home I realized there was no way I could feed her with it on so I took it off.  She barely ate the first day – I got her to drink a little water and some hay. I tried to put the cone back on her for when I went to sleep and couldn’t make sure she didn’t get to her stitches but as soon as I got it on her she freaked out. I figured that since she hadn’t tried to get to her stitches yet, it was more likely she was going to tear them open by bucking like a bull with it on. So my boyfriend told me to just get some sleep and we could take turns watching her and sleeping until morning (I know – he’s awesome). The next day we knew we couldn’t do that again – especially since she began picking at her stitches.  I went out and bought an inflatable e-collar…which she quickly bit a hole in and tossed off.  We called the vet and she was adamant that we put the collar back on as long as she tried to get at the stitches. So we put it on and placed her in the carrier so she couldn’t run around crazy. This seemed to calm her. My boyfriend had the smart idea to trim it so she could eat on her on.  Now she is still annoyed with it but it is bearable.  Eventually we let her back out into her “yard” (aka big inside play pen). She is eating lots of hay, spinach, some banana, water, and will let me hand feed her a few pellets every now and again.  Poor girl couldn’t get to her soft poo last night and we had to clean it off of her cone, but as I am typing this I just witnesses a successful poo snack! (never thought I would celebrate my bunny eating her own poop)

Does all of this seem normal? Is there anything else I can be doing? She has a re-check with the vet in a week and a half. She doesn’t seem to be in any pain – just not too happy with me.

Also- what should I expect, as far as behavior, when she is fully recovered?

Glad to hear it went well. That sound perfectly normal. Most bunnies take a few days to start eating and pooping normally. Not all bunnies have to wear the cone, but one of mine did.

Just make sure to check her incision every day for redness, swelling, bleeding and try to limit her activity.

Honestly, I never noticed much difference in behavior after my girls were spayed.

Thanks for the response! Lola is doing even better today.
