I was carrying stuff in from my car tonight, and I apparently stepped on Whisky’s foot on my way to the kitchen. I didn’t even feel it, so I think it was maybe just her toes that I stepped on, or maybe I just kicked her and didn’t actually step on her. I don’t know exactly.

Anyway, she’s limping and favoring her left hind foot. She won’t put weight on it, and isn’t crazy about me touching it. She’s jumped off the couch a couple times okay, but won’t land on it. She refuses to eat her greens (she did have a little piece of kale and a little piece of spinach, but won’t touch the rest, which is VERY unusual for her—she usually scarfs down her greens), but I did get her to eat a small bowl of pellets no problem, and she ate an apple chip. She’s groomed her favorite pillows a bit, but otherwise she is definitely not herself.

She’ll let me pick her up without much struggle, and I can pet her without an issue unless I get near that hind foot, and then she tenses up.

I tried the only emergency vet in my area but apparently they don’t do rabbits. The only vet in the area that does is an hour away and won’t be open till 8am.

My current plan is to make sure she’s comfy for bedtime, and remove most of her greens, leaving just enough so I can tell if she’s eaten any. If she keeps eating and doesn’t seem to be doing any worse, then I’d rather hold off on the vet visit for another day and see if she improves. But at the same time, I definitely don’t want to do anything that’s going to put her at risk for worse injuries.

My gut is telling me this is a sprain, and not a break, since she doesn’t seem to be favoring it that much (like, she lays on it no problem, she just doesn’t want to stand on it). She won’t let me get a really good look at it, but with the little bit of a look I managed nothing seemed majorly wrong.

I guess I just need someone to tell me that either yes, she should be fine in a day or two and to keep an eye on her in case things worsen, or no, I’m being a horrible bunny mama if I don’t take her to the vet straight away in the am.

I would take her to the vet WTB. Buns can usually hide pain and if she is actively displaying it then you should get it looked at.

So now that she’s had some time on the couch to relax and some pellets, she’s not favoring it as much. She’s still limping a little, but she does seem to be putting some weight on it now, whereas before she was holding it off the floor completely. I’m feeling slightly less worried, though I’m still going to re-evaluate in the am (since I can’t go to the vet till then anyway). Hopefully she’ll be back to normal. Fingers crossed.

And I should add she’s also now snuggling with the dog, which is her usual stress-management technique.

Oh I don ‘t the emergency vet is necessary but I would get your usual vet to have a look. It’s good she is putting some weight on it now.

She just scratched her ear gently with that foot, so I’m thinking that’s a good sign, too. I’ll reassess in the morning, and then decide whether the vet can wait till Thursday/Friday or if she needs to go tomorrow.

Just a little update: Whisky seems to be doing a lot better today. She has full range of motion on the leg, she’s just still not really putting much weight on it. Her appetite is great, though. I’m definitely thinking it’s more of a mild sprain at this point, since she’s interested in her toys and is moving around, just carefully. She’s not grouchy at all and lets me touch it as long as I’m gentle. She’s even been more inclined to be picked up, which is kind of hit or miss for her some days.

At this point, I’m watching her closely, giving her extra love, and keeping my fingers crossed she’ll keep improving. Since I’m 99% sure it’s a sprain, the vet won’t be able to do anything for her anyway, and since it’s an hour ride and she doesn’t have much car experience (and I don’t have a good carrier for her since she decided to pee all over hers…), I’d rather not make the trip if we don’t have to. I’ll keep everyone posted!

Another update: She’s still favoring the leg, but she jumps on and off the couch no problem, and even did a sort of mini-run from the living room into the next room last night before deciding that was too much. She let me get a much better feel of it today, and comparing it to the other leg, I can feel no difference, so I’m confident it’s not broken. Her appetite is excellent, and she’ll even stand up on her hind legs a little if I have parsley in my hand (she’s too impatient to wait for me to just give it to her).

Just one more update on Whisky. She’s about 90% better as of tonight. She’s still favoring the foot a tiny bit, but lets me touch/feel it no problem. If you aren’t paying close attention, you can’t even tell she’s limping. So thankful that she’s okay. Next up is scheduling her spay appointment for sometime this summer!

Sounds like you escaped a close one. It’s tough because you love the attention from your pet, but when they get directly underfoot it’s so frustrating. Glad she’s doing so much better
