I tried a lot of different beddings for my bun, but he seems to love the aspen shavings! Kiln dried, hypoallergenic, no aromatic phenol’s that can be toxic, and dust free. He loves to nibble on the shavings. It’s a huge pain to clean sometimes compared to Carefresh(his litter), but I’ve tried carefresh as bedding! He just pushes it to the ends of his cage and eats it!  Anyone have any thoughts on the overall safety and/or any hazards regarding the  Living World aspen shavings? I don’t mind the messiness since that’s the only bedding he doesn’t throw or kick around(intentionally).

Hardwoods like aspen are safe. It’s also okay to be nibbling/eating a bit since it’s just extra fibre. You don’t really need bedding outside the litter box though.

Does your rabbit kick Carefresh out of the litter box also? If so you can try pushing it down into the litter box when you change it.

Don’t put any bedding AT ALL in his cage – he doesn’t need it – try something like a carpet or a grass mat… You are wasting money, taking too much time cleaning this and it confuses a rabbit who has a litter box.

I would love to put some sort of fabric for the cage floor but he might eat it (or chew it) and if I don’t have anything then by god there will be fermenting piles of poop and pee being dragged around by his paws and feet within 10 minutes. I don’t know what to do…

John- No he doesn’t really move his Carefresh litter :p

Aspen is my litter of choice for Liebchen. Petco had their brand of aspen shavings on sale about 2 and a half months ago – 4 cubic feet of litter of $6.99 (it’s usually $13.99), so I stocked up and bought 3 big bags since that’s as much as I have room to store at one time (also bought some cat food so I spent enough to get free shipping). I clean Liebchen’s litter box pretty much everyday and I still have some of the first bag left. It’s definitely an economical choice.

I second what others say… Don’t put litter outside the litter box. Try buying a sea grass mat (safe if bunny chews them). Some poops WILL be kicked out of the box… But it’s not like the poops will start to rot or stink any faster without being on top of the litter. As long as your rabbit doesn’t pee outside of their box there’s no need to have litter outside the box.

You might try the carpet and see if he does – you may be surprised that he might not.

I’ll give it a try! Nothing with any stitch pulled loose fabric mats/carpets because he claws and nibbles at any and all fabrics…so maybe an easily washable blanket of some sort? He’s a little nippy at me because I took the bedding out (but binky’d anyway haha ). So far he only peed in his litter tray! aside from a dozen droppings everywhere else…
