Hey everyone! So, I have been reading about some people using their dog kennels as bunny cages? I have used this kennel for my bun’s outdoor play pen during the day as it is entirely closed so no animals can get to him and the bottom allows for grass to sneak through for him to eat! I am planning on getting a bigger outdoor kennel for him so he can actually run and jump.

Right now, he has a two story wooden hutch for inside, and he is just tearing it to shreds…chews on it all the time, even though he has unlimited hay and so much more to chew on that I gave him. I think he does it to annoy me, so I have to put him in a small cage at night, and want to be able to find something he can stay in all the time (when he isn’t free roaming of course) So I thought about using the dog kennel!

We do have a cat, so I plan on putting something around the outside of the kennel and on top to give him some sort of privacy (the cat doesn’t interrogate him, just would make me feel better) so I plan on either wood on the outside of the kennel or hook some fleece to it. But until then, what do you guys think?

Here is the dimensions of the kennel:

PS: It does have a pull out tray, but it does not fit end to end, it does move a little back and forth, is that something to worry about? OR I can lay down a whole fleece blanket instead of they tray to protect the floor underneath.

        35.5″ Long (side to side)

        25″ Height (top to bottom)

        22″ Width (front to back)

Each bar is 1.5″ wide and 5.5″ long

        Thanks!

I actually used a dog crate for my previous bun when I adopted her. I was only planning on using it till I bonded her with my other rabbit but unfortunately the bond didn’t work out. I personally felt that the crate was to small for my size bunny and an exercise pen or an NIC Cube type cage worked a little better. It gave my bunny more room. Even though I let her out to exercise. I still wanted to have a bigger cage when she was in there.

Hi there. Thanks for your reply

I do plan on building a bigger cage when the funds come, but for now I want to use something I already have access to. I just need to know if it is safe for my bun, given the dimensions I posted

I used a large dog kennel for Olivia for several years before I built her a condo. It was much larger than commercial pet store cages and she was pretty content with it.

While I was bunnysitting my brother’s friend’s bun, we kept him in a large dog kennel. It seemed to work just fine, although it got a bit messy whenever he’d accidentally kick bedding outside the bars.

But, many years ago, my family kept my first bunny in a dog kennel outside without a bottom for a few weeks after we moved to a new house. She started digging holes in the grass so we had to move it to a new spot every day. Other than that, no issues and she was happy. =)
